I am working through Excelisys' Hierarchical Portals (http://www.excelisys.com/services/fmp7/tips_tricks.htm). The MainID is a vital part of the ParentPathID. However, when I read the accompanying white paper, I can't figure it out. Has anyone used this hierarchy before? Can anyone help me figure out how to append the MainID into the ParentPathID? 1. Can I do "4 up" printing? My current design calls for pages that are 1/4 of a letter-sized sheet. With columns I can lay out two 1/4 pages on a layout. Can I put two more pages below the first two? The idea is to print 4 directory pages on each letter-sized sheet, then cut it to get the 4 pages. Note that I am not using OS X's "n-up" printing, which reduces the size of multiple pages on each sheet. 2. Can I arrange pages in "folio" format (if that's the word)? For example, for a 16 page directory pages 1 and 16 would print on the first sheet, 2 and 15 on the next, 3 and 14 on the back of 2 and 15, etc. The sheets would fold together to make a booklet. …

Is there some special incense I need to burn in order to make format a layout to properly print out on Avery 8373 labels? This seems to work in WORD but will not align properly in filemaker. Page set up is set for vertical orientation. Scale is set at 100% Label format is selected at avery 8373. Any suggestions? Jarvis

Hi, I have a parent table and a child table. The parent table has a number key called CLID and the child table has a number key called CHID. In the child table I have a second number field called CLID so that in the Relationship I can link the parent and the child. On the Relationship screen it looks good, the parent and child have a one-to-many relationship. Am I doing ok so far? Then on the layout for the parent, I have a button which I would like to navigate to the related child records. Hello all: I have another head banger question here. I have a text field that displays values as check boxes from a value list. On that field I have a button script. I would like to be able to run code if the user has de-selected a checkbox. How can you find out if the checkbox was indeed unselected thru the button script. I tried using pattern count but the value of the checkbox even though its de-selected is still in the list. Is it a question of the record not being committed? Basically I want to test if the checkbox is de-selected and then run some code but when I check the field the checkbox I de-selected is still present in the list. I guess the r…

I have a rather simple database, created in FMP 8.5 and hosted through the 8.0 Server Advanced. I have the Guest account set up as read only and anyone accessing the database through the web only has access to the Guest account. They can read and peruse the database only. But the database has 5 layouts - only one of which I want IWP users to see. However when I go to edit the Guest privilage set the area where I can set layout access is grayed out. Does anyone have any idea how I can limit the IWP access users to just one of the five layouts? TIA

I have a checkbox field that I've defined with a button over it so when it is clicked it runs a script. The problem is when I go into Find Mode I need to be able to search based on this checkbox, but in find mode the button is still active so I can't directly select the checkbox. This is probably a basic question, is there a way to disable the button when in Find Mode? Thanks.

Hi I am not sure if this problem should go here or not. This is my case. I have a container field (g_graphic) that is defined as a repetition field from 1 thru 50 and is also a global field. This field holds all the images that are being used in the system. I added one image in g_graphic[40] ie, in 40th repetition. In browse mode, I clicked on the field, then clicked insert->Picture and then selected the graphic file. Everything works fine after that till I close FMP file. the image does not get stored in that field. When I reopen the file, the image is gone. Hello, I am a total beginner. I have a layout which includes radio buttons. Then I started a second layout for a different table, and for some reason I can't get radio buttons to work anymore. When I go through the steps, I get a value list but no buttons. Just the list of choices, like this: Male Female Where'd those buttons go!!! Hi there. I have a page whose Body contains a list (Browse; List) of some records. On the Footer of the page are more records laid out that display much more information about any of the single lines on the list above (when clicked/highlighted). As the footer section is fairly heft in screen real estate (half a 1024x768 page) Im looking to achieve a rollup effect. I want to be able to have a button (maybe on each row of the list, or preferably a single button for the page) that opens up the detail section only as required, leaving more room for the main list to display in. Not sure how to give this a subject but here's what I'm trying to do. I've got a typical quotation system, separate header table contains name, address, date, along with subtotal, taxes, shipping, etc. I'd like to produce a layout that will handle multiple pages. The problem I've got is trying to only display the subtotal, taxes, shipping, comment, etc. on the bottom of the last page. I've tried: A) using a trailing grand summary but this floats. I can't get it pinned down to the bottom of the page. B putting these fields into a footer, but this means these fields appear on every page. I only want them on the last page. Hi. I am looking to change the background color of a row depending on data in the row. I was thinking of using a technique like changing the text color based on a condition as a field, by having a background block behind the fields on each row and having it change color depending on the condition. Hello. I have a list of data that I want to display to users in Browse Mode, and I need to find a way to visually separate the sections of it when the date field changes. The best way I can think to describe it is that, when I build the layout with a sub-summary field that displays when sorted by date and contains a horizontal line, I get EXACTLY what I want - in Preview Mode. Hello: I have a field set to a value list displayed as checkboxes. I have a 2nd field with 2 radio buttons. If a user clicks one of the radio buttons I want the user to have to choose one of the check boxes. How do I set this up? Also, is there a way to set a field to be non-enterable and only enterable if there is a value in a specific field? I have a file that includes a variety of multi-line fields that aren't wrapping entire words but rather are line breaking within a word. The words aren't hypenated and there's nothing unusual about them. It's happening for every word that should wrap to the beginning of the next line. Anyone seen this? Am I missing a setting? Hi Everyone, After reading some white papers and talking to other developers many people seem to be in agreement that supressing the Status Area is a good idea when developing solutions for distribution to people other than other FMP developers. I have programmed my most recent project that way and aside from some other things I really like the way it reclaims some valuable screen real estate. I have a layout that displays, in List view, a set of Invoices. Invoices are paid either by Cash, Check, or Charge. In the footer of the list I'd like to show totals by payment method, updated automatically as invoices are added. I could create three buckets in every record, populating the appropriate one with the invoice total, and create three summary fields, but I wondered if there weren't a slicker way. Thanks! Chap

I'm trying to create an ultra-simple invoice generation interface for people who may have never used a computer before. LaRetta's technique for highlighting the active field works absolutely great, and I'm most appreciative. I'm stuck, however, with making radio buttons look and act the way I want them to. I would like to reorder the records that appear in a portal. Can this be done using the small black up and down arrows that appear in a sort dialog box? Or in the scriptmaker dialog box? Basically it's a click and drag the record to the row number you want it to be. Click row 5 and drag it to row 1 and then it becomes row 1.

Hi everyone. I have been doing some small number of sales on eBay and have a small Filemaker Runtime I created on a USB Keyring drive so I can log into my eBay wherever I am and update my sales and such. I recently was able to start uploading 50+ sales per week into eBay and now manually entering these sales into my little runtime is not as quick an "in and out" as it was initially designed to be when I was doing 10 per week. I am a total newcomer to FileMaker... I have a layout and would like to add a portal so that I can add records to another table. So I walk through the steps to add the portal, but then when I go to browse mode, I can't enter any data into the portal area. I can change the tab order to include the portal fields, but in browse mode the tab never goes there. I must be missing something! Thanks!

This is my first time playing with webviewer. I am trying to load a URL that contains a '%'. It looks like this: https://www.site.com/feeds.cfc?method=Orders&ver=1.00&merchant=319&URLKey=Jo%3D The URL that it actually attempts to load is: https://www.site.com/feeds.cfc?method=Orders&ver=1.00&merchant=319&URLKey=Jo%253D It has replaced the % with %25, and it causes the page to not load. I have tried everything I can think of to trick it into sending just the %. Using different variations of to escape it out, putting the URL into a separate field and loading the field, etc. No dice. Any suggestions?

I think this might be a strange one, or a simple one, I have no idea. Lets say I have two fields: Payment Amount and Payment Type These fields aren't always used so I can't make either one of them a requirement to fill out. However I would like if they enter a "payment amount" that payment type becomes required. Is there a way to do this? I was thinking a validation calculation? I'm not even sure how to approach this. I have a table called Tenant, it has a field called Property that is a drop down value list which the values comes from the Properties table. In my table Tenant, I also have a field called Unit #, it is a look up field from Properties table. Now that would work normally except when I enter 1126 Brookeridge I would like the Unit # to show a list of the Units there (that would be 1 through 10) but instead it only shows me the first one. I know that when I specified my lookup it says that it will copy the first value from the related item. But I know I have seen other databases do this. Any help would be appreciated.

Following the creation of a new record, I use a value list (showing keys from another table) for the user to establish a link to a pre-existing, but optional, set of information -- and that Popup selection method works well for the users. The problem arises when someone changes their mind and wants to remove/clear the link. Is it possible to have the Popup Menu include a "null/empty" value that they could select to remove any prior assignment? I really don't want to have a "clear link assignment" button for such a minor usage case. And for the obvious reasons, I'd like to avoid having a dummy record with a blank ID, but that's the only way I've come up with. …

Hi, Been struggling with this for a few hours now. I have a portal on my layout and one field is a Yes / No field, at some point I need the user to be able to change the yes/no field in the portal to a “Yes” answer in all the portal rows which show up for that record.. I have tried the setfield script but it only changes the first portal row field to “Yes” Is there a way to change the yes/no field in all the portal rows for a particular record at one time. This is probably an age old question but I don't see an answer and can't solve it myself. Create a complex, multi-page report with sliding fields, how the heck do you keep fields from getting split in the middle at the bottom of the page. I lose an entire row of data to this problem most times. I've gone so far as to make sure everything was an even multiple of 18px so that if it did break, it would do so evenly--nope, no cigar. I still lose data and print drivers screw things up anyway.

I have a DB with approx 100 layouts. Recently when changing the layout order the moved layout's name changes automatically to the name of the layout above it. Is there a fix for this or is FM just being screwy. Poses some problems if you want to maintain a logical order of things in the DB ?

I have a layout with multiple portals in it. I've used sliding to adjust the portals to fit the information within them. Is there a way to eliminate whitespace between the individual portals (bring them closer to each other when they have less data and are shorter then originally set in the layout)? Never mind my newbie question. I figured out what I was doing wrong (not selecting all the objects that I wanted to slide at the same time and setting sliding guidelines).

Im having problems with getting the sliding function to work. I have attached a small version of the database Im working on. I have marked off the sections I would like to slide, based on how many extra fields have been added on the main layout. However, neither in preview mode, or when printing does it actually slide up. File 1 - [color:red]Orders shows each order as a single record; File 2 - [color:red]Items if you order 5 red widgets and 3 blue widgets, each widget is an individual record in Items ie a total of 8 records. I have many instances where this would come in handy but I'll give one example. I have a layout that everybody here has been using that displays all of a product's information on one screen. One particular peice of data displayed here is called Status (sold, returned, tech, rma, etc.) I actually have 2 status fields. One is a regular edit box and another is an calc. field that updates based on when that particular item has been added into an invoice. I'm totally blanking here. I've got a table of Donations and a table of Donors related by Donor ID. I've got a found set of Donations, sorted by alphabetically by Donor Name. I've got a sub-summary part breaking on Donor Name, listing the Donor Name and Donor City and Donor State and a summary field of Total Donations. That all works fine. I want to be able to "put" word documents in my database (in browse mode, for the user) and be able to open, edit, save and create them inside the database. So when I click on a document in FM it will open in Microsoft Word and I can edit it and then save and close it and it will be saved in FM. I've tried to use the container fields and it doesn't seem to work very well. Eventually I will have a portal to another table that will have all of the documents that apply to a certain customer. Okay, I'm still perplexed. I've read through many of the value-list posts and I am still confused. I want to create a multi-layered value list. The list is hierarchical and has up to seven layers. (The list is the state of California's educational content standards). Items in the last layer (i.e. the seventh layer) are unique and I would like them to be displayed in a portal. As they are an Event team member, they also show up in the attendees table, as they've attended an Event. Hi, In a clients table I have: - PORTAL1: A contact portal. - PORTAL2: An address portal that shows addresses for the selected contact. A button in PORTAL1 sets a global field and allows the user to show related addresses for that contact. The problem is when the user moves from one client record to another client record. Because the global remains, the user sees the wrong PORTAL2 information in every client record. Hi - I have a list layout that I was adding an active highlight bar to, following one of the demos on the Nightwing site. It was going fine - I had it working, and was just trying to tweak a couple of appearances of fields, and all of a sudden it stopped letting me switch to layout mode on that layout. I can switch on a different layout, but as soon as I come back, it goes into browse mode. I think it has to do with the zippscript that is part of the technique, but not sure why that should keep triggering and bringing me back to browse mode. Thanks, Michael

I have a contact database that contains customers and some non customers-bill to contacts, load at and deliver to locations. Each entry is assigned a descriptor via checkboxes: Customer Bill To Load At Deliver To Sometimes one entry can have multiple descriptor. Hello All, I've got a database that tracks volunteer information and a related table that tracks the hours the volunteers put in. Each record in the related table only tracks the Department, Month, and how many hours they put in for that month (no date fields involved, strictly text and number). How can I summarize all of the hours for all volunteers (separately and all together), and also split up by which department the hours were for? I'm so confused, I don't know where to start! Whenever I navigate to anyone of the last 8 layouts in my solution using the layout menus I’m always taken to the last layout. I have 264 layouts. If I select any layout from 1 to 255 using the layout menus, works fine. If I select 256 or any layout beyond 255 I end up on the last layout (264) every time. It’s the same in browse or layout mode. Is this a normal limitation of the layout menu? Thanks

I'm working on a database solution for my babysitting business. Things are coming along nicely, but I'm having a problem showing data in a portal. The portal is based on the table occurence Job_SitterAvailability. The portal should show what sitters are available for a given job. I have selected a record in a portal. Now I want to go to another layout in which I have set up all the editable fields I want the user to be able to access (these are not portal fields). Programatically, I would like to say, go to such-and-such a layout and display the record whose (say) companyID field = $$ID. This seems like such a basic request, I'm almost ashamed to ask for help. Hi, I am looking for a way to create a database to be used to track information for a trade show. The basic database is easy, but I really want a graphical interface for it. In MS Excel there is a simple command to transpose data. To do this you copy a row of values then perform a process called "paste special > transpose". Anything that was a row becomes a column and anything that was a column becomes a row. Is there a way to do something like this in table view? What I would like to have is my fields arrayed in column format with all the record values distributed horizontally across the page like a spreadsheet. Hello, Is there a way to combine multiple tables into one report? When I try to use the Sub-Summarize By, the set up dialogs make this eem like it would work but when I perform the actual sorts I get results I do not expect. Hi. I need help in customizing my file so that when I'm entering data in the Browse mode, I can see which box is active as I tab from box to box. Currently, it is a barely noticable black outline (which doesn't help because my boxes already have a black border. Is there a way to have the cursor flash in red and faster? perhaps a highlight of the entire field?

I don't know what it's called when you embed the contents from a field in text without a textfield. I hope everyone knows what <> is talking about. That thing. Anyway, when you don't know what it's called, it's very hard to search for it, but my problem is this. I'm showing results from a timestamp field in this manner. Is it possible to specify the formatting of it in this manner? It seems to display in DD/MM/YY HH:MM:SS AM, but if I just want it DD/MM HHMM, how would I do it?

I created a series of files on a Mac; I then transferred the files to a PC. I expected to have color differences, but I did not expect that the printed output from several layouts would have all kinds of spacing problems. When I looked at the layouts on screen, they appeared to look OK; but when I printed them the elements of the layouts hsd shifted severely. In order to get them to print correctly I had to move the elements around. This involved a lot of cut and try time and paper, but eventually I got them so they print OK. HOWEVER, now they look all cockeyed on screen. What causes this, and is there a way to fix it? TIA

Hello folks, I'm developing a simple relational database as a student assistant on my college campus. I have a database set up with 4 tables. In short, its for a disciplinary action department on the campus. everything stems from the incident tables. One incident can have one or many charges, and one or many sanctions. From a layout perspective, I can't figure out how to allow input for multiple charges and multiple sanctions. And then search for an incident and have it display those multiple charges and sanctions. Does anyone have experience with a situation like this, or am i making any sense? ;)

Hello, I am evaluating FM Pro 8.5 and am having basic problems with the Web Viewer features. I just don't know how to set it up and the documentation is just not helping me make the connection. The ultimate goal is to do some screen scraping. But the problem I seem to run into is that I don't know how to reference the Web Viewer as an object. At no point was I ever asked to assign an object name that I could use to reference it in a script. Also, the FM Pro 8.5 online help makes a reference to creating a Web Viewer as a button, but never really explains how to do this. Hello everybody, I have a situation where I have created a layout that would act as a dialog box to select values from. My plan is to have a portal that would display Attendance records. When a new record is created, to get the value of what type of Absence this is, the small layout would appear next to the object in the portal that the script is linked to. I have the object named and am using GetLayoutObjectAttributes to get the exact pixel location of where the box should appear, right next to the object. I'm trying to avoid the above scenario, where I in a selfjoin portal use the recordID to point in a List( of related ID's in 3 tables, and use it to pluck values to each line from the 3 related tables, take a look at the graph above! OK, I go through the process of creating a portal with the appropriate fields, etc. It shows up on the layout (layout mode of course) and there's the portal and it's fields. Switch to brows mode and the fields disappear. Switch back to layout mode and find that the fields are now behind the portal and I cannot bring them in front of the portal. One portal that I made the other day had this issue. Today I opened the database and I could enter data in the fields! But I wanted to move the portal and so I did, fields and all. I am using the Business Productivity template from File Maker and launched it to be used via web. One of the screens allows the user to choose from a list of tasks or contacts. The list is in a preview type mode with no roladex to the left. The problem is there are hundreds of records and I cant find a way to scroll to the next page via web. I have a related field within a portal on a report page that I only want to show if the "sort by" field in the Leading Sub-Summary has a certain value. The Leading Sub-Summary is a "Products" field. When that field is "ProductA", I want the related first and last name fields for the clients who own that product to show in the portal. When that field is "Other", I want the related client first and last name fields AND the "othersDiscussed" field to show in the portal. I am creating a layout which is a letter. Most of the letter is fixed text but part of it is variable text entered by the user. I never know how long the variable text will be. I have tried every combination of sliding and merging that I can think of to get the fixed text to merge with the variable text but I don't know how to get text (variable or fixed) to wrap to the next line (or slide up and merge with the previous line) if it does not fit on the current line. Can anybody help? I have been working on this for days and I'm out of ideas. I'm relatively new to FileMaker so I am hoping someone can clue me in on what I am missing. Thanks.

The parent table is just so i can have a summary of each of the schools with their respective totals. Hello, This is my first question here so I hope I can explain what I am attempting to do correctly. I hope I have posted in the proper area as well. I keep a small database in FM8.5 of my students, of course some students my have a sibling in my class as well. Hi, I have a Project DB wich includ related phase to the project, I'm abel to do a sub-summury report of all the material I need for each phase for a project. But what I want to do is to view the sub-summury of the material in a portal. Now in my portal I see all the dupplicate record of material. Hi Folks, I have a problem with trying to close a report window shown to a user in a runtime solution because the X is dimmed out. Apparantly you can't close windows in Runtime solutions, so to fix it I will just pause the script running the report, then when the user hits the continue button I will continue the script and close the window. That's all fine, but how can I hide the Cancel button from the status area so the user doesn't invariably hit that and muck everything up ? Any ideas ? Thanks heaps Regards Paul

Hi all, This may actually be a question more geared towards sorting, but I'll try it here and see what happens. What I'm trying to do is report sales by quarters and months with the following criteria: Invoices must list all line items. Monthly and quarterly grand totals must be broken into line item sales, taxes and shipping. As you may see from my example, everything works except the monthly and quarterly tax and shipping grand totals that appear in the trailing subsummary parts. I apologize if this has been asked and answered but I can't find anything in the archives by a search using the title of this post as my criteria. It seems fairly random and I have not been able to nail this down, but sometimes when I am in FileMaker my screen will flicker and roll after running a script or manually changing layouts. Sometimes it will roll several dozen times. It looks almost like a looping script is running in slow motion and the "freeze window" script step has not been set. I have a Customer table containing about 600 records, self-joined to filter out those 50 or so marked Inactive. I'm using a drop-down list with auto-complete to allow user to select from an active customer name. It works fine except that it's slow (the auto-complete can't even keep up with my typing). The culprit seems to be the filtering relationship: it's snappy enough when I use the unfiltered Customer table to populate the value list.
