I have a feeling this is due to a incorrectly set up server setting, but I figured I would ask here anyways... When I enter the smtp information in the email notifications, I get an error that says "SMTP test failed, Cannot connect to SMTP server. Check the SMTP settings an email address." Settings and e-mail address are correct. I am using Filemaker Server 11 with Mac OS X 10.6. Please be gentle with me as, while I am very comfortable with Filemaker, I have no idea how to setup a server, I am in the process of learning. What am I doing wrong? Where should I start troubleshooting? For what it's worth. On the server machine, I cannot load a…

Hey Guys, I am working with an organisation who has just moved to using file maker server, I want to open the file maker port on the server to enable remote access. However, I have been told by a few people that this is very risky and leaves the server vulnerable. Just wanted to see if you guys had any advise re this? I know there is the VPN route, but in previous organisations I have worked with, this has been a hassle to setup and use. I've got to present some evidence to management either way, so I would be grateful for any thoughts/sources. Cheers, Dan

I have worked with FM for years but I've never gone beyond local networking. I have multiple business locations and have a need to set up a server instead of independent databases that are merged batch from time to time. My remote sites all have Filemaker programs and I'm not interested in publishing the database but opening up remotely. I would have initially a need for 25 concurrent users with room to grow to 35+. The database is all text and is around a Gig. Can anyone suggest a good hardware configuration that would support this. Since the database contains customer files, there is a lot of data entry with about a third of the users. I'm trying to figure a configurat…

ok, i'm completely new to filemaker server. never had a need for it until recently. so, that being said....i'm stuck. i moved one of my databases over to the fms on my server and access is from multiple fmp clients in our office. i have a few reports that i need to save out as pdf...but the relative path doesn't work anymore. so, i've tried multiple directories and can't get it to export. i just want it to save into a folder that is in the same directory as the fp7 file. i've tried creating a variable to: "file:/Weekly Reports/name.pdf" "file:WeeklyReports/name.pdf" "file:name.pdf" "fmnet:/<ip address>/path/name.pdf" any ideas??…

We have historically run FMSA on Windows servers. Over the past year we've built a few solutions that use Supercontainer. It wasn't until after the solutions were up and running that we discovered SC on a Windows box has some limitations. What we were able to work out with our IT group was getting a Mac server (running Lion desktop, not Lion Server) to handle the WPE and SC duties for our main FMSA machine that was still Windows (Server 2008 r2). On the surface things work OK. However, we've noticed a few oddities that I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on: 1 - IWP users seem to have an extended delay when logging into a database now. It's …

So the two-year experiment with FMP running on five stations has been a success, and the boss has authorized me to buy licenses for all thirteen workplace terminals. I'm looking at the bundle for ten seats of FMP and one install of FM Server. (Our little network will not be very busy for, say, eighteen months, as I start writing, then integrating, databases to handle all the variables that are currently tracked on slips of paper.) We don't have a server - just networked PCs. It's clear to me that for fifteen FMP clients to see databases, I need to have Server installed on a standalone terminal. My question: Will I have a problem if I buy a $400 machine l…

Running Mac OS Server 10.6.8 When I try to configure Web services in FMS Console i get the following error: In "Edit Server Deployment", upon clicking "Finish", I see this error: "Deployment/Configuration error -30 Sending request error (attempt #1):java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused. I have verified that Apache is up and running. And that all needed ports are open. I have a backup FMS server that has same configuration, but does not present this error. Hi Everyone, I'm hopeful someone out there has some insight into this problem at hand as Filemaker support here in Australia doesn't know what to do next. Basically over the past month or so my client has been suffering disconnections or staff unable to connect to the host each day. We had noticed the Bonjour service crashing with an error in the logs (and restarting sucessfully itself) but it doesn't exactly match the periods when users can no longer connect. The strange things is we may have one or two users able to sstay connected in the morning (when others can no longer see or attach to the database) who can also disconnect and reconnect sucessfully. We'v…

I just installed FileMaker Server Admin 8. When I attempt to connect to the FileMaker Server from within Server Admin, I get "Could not connect to FileMaker Server "(localhost) (136.xxx.xx.xxx)". I currently have "Favorite Servers" selected in the 'View' drop down, and the IP address in the Address column is correct, and I have (localhost) in the 'Hostname' column. I changed the Hostname to the full hostname for the machine, and tried again, but I got t he same error, the only difference was that the word "(localhost)" in the error was replaced with the true hostname for the machine. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, here? Thanks in advance.

Hello, I know next to nothing about Filemaker Pro, and have been tasked with upgrading our company's Filemaker Pro from 8 to 11. Before we do so, I've been asked to stage a test environment, where I install 8, create a database (and enter a few entries into it) as well as 2 users, then I'm supposed to use the .fp7 file from 8 when I install 11. Anyways, to my point, I installed Filemaker Server, and when I try to "connect to FileMaker Server" from within Server Admin (with "Favorite Servers" selected in the 'View' dropdown), I get "Could not connect to FileMaker Server "(localhost) (127.0.0.1)". Now, I know that 127.0.0.1 isn't the IP Address of the se…

Hi all, since our upgrade to FMPA 11, we've had all kinds of issues. It looks like the upgrade wiped out a bunch of the IIS settings we had for our websites. That seems to be mostly fixed now, but we're still getting a persistent PHP error on our PHP/ODBC/FM site. The site runs and displays correctly, so it's not a problem with accessing our Filemaker database. It's just that as part of the text displayed on every page, we get this message: Notice: Only variable references should be returned by reference in C:\Program Files\FileMaker\FileMaker Server\Web Publishing\publishing-engine\php\FileMaker\Command.php on line 126 This is one of the filemak…

I've been driving myself crazy searching for a week; I figured I'd post here in case anyone can help. Our ASP.NET apps (the ones which use an ODBC connection to our FM database) broke after upgrading from FMSA 9 to FMSA 11. I've installed the new ODBC driver, changed the system DSN to use that new driver, and still get nothing but a server error. The error for one of the apps is this: System.Data.Odbc.OdbcException: ERROR [iM002] [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified The other app seems to work with small amount of data (it takes input from a text field, does operations on it, and returns the modified da…

Hi, long time user of Filemaker Pro (I started with a "dummies" book right when version 3.0 came out, the first relational version), and I've really loved using the program all these years. It's actually made it enjoyable to work with data and run my business. I've posted here before about running Filemaker Server 11 on SSDs, since SSDs are pretty much the most interesting thing to come along in computing since multicore processors. I have been told by smarter users here (people who do Filemaker for a living) that I was crazy to consider it, that SSDs were an "unknown" and no one should be running them on Filemaker server applications. I decided to take the risk any…

This question might be off topic for a technical discussion of FMS 11 but I'm kind of in a jam. A small company I develop for wants to upgrade its FileMaker solution that I set up ( peer to peer ) to be FileMaker Server based. The problem I'm having is the company still uses purchase orders to buy software and every company I check with wants a credit card. Does anyone know of a software retailer that still takes purchase orders? A few companies will do business by purchase order if it is a government agency buying the software but this client is just a small business ( real estate management ). Thanks, John

Running FileMaker Server Advanced 11.0.3.309 on Windows Server 2008 R2. Been running fairly stably for over a year. Recently after Windows Security updates (I know, I know ...) Web Publishing stopped working. The first time I restarted the service and it was fine, but the second time restarting didn't work, and re-deploying even hung. I rebooted the server, and attempted to deploy Web Publishing. It appeared to be going smoothly, but at the end of the process I got a warning dialog: "Deployment/Configuration error -23 Web Server entry already exists in the configuration file." The publishing engine uses IIS. Any ideas? Francis McNally fm2518@att.…

Hi all, I have one FileMaker installation that ran for a long time. It's running under Windows Vista Recently, we had to reinstall one workstation, which needs to be able to access FileMaker data. The machine is installed with XP Pro, and FileMaker 11 client. When, on that particular workstation, we try to access the databases from the server, we can see the server, but none of its published databases. So I tried to access the database by using its URL (I copied the URL from a working workstation), and the workstation tells me that the database is unavaliable or absent We desperately need to put this workstation back on track, but I have no clue on how to …

Hi All - I am sure this question has been answered, but I have been searching the internet and forum for an hour, an hour I don't really have, and have not found the answer. In the context of, "Set maximum idle time...", what does FileMaker Server consider to be idle time? Maybe a better question would be what does a user have to do to NOT be considered idle?

I'm curious to know if anyone has encountered this issue... Background: I have a script scheduled to run from server whereby a snapshot link (SNL) is created and sent to recipients to allow them quick access to a determined set of records. The script runs perfectly and the SNL is created, attached and emailed just fine with one exception.. The problem: Since the script is run server-side, the SNL is coded with the LAN IP of the server: 10.x.x.x. The emails (and SNL) are sent to users who access the database over the WAN. As a result, the SNL won't work for these users. To complicate things even further, I have a dynamic IP and use DynDNS. Besides rol…

What is the optimal setup for hard drives, RAM, processors to maximize performance for a growing database running on FM Server 11 and FM Pro 11? This causes the server side script to crash and any others after it will not be run. Hi All, We run OS X Lion server for our business, and have just applied the 11.0v4 update (well, re-install really not exactly an update) so that web-publishing works under Lion. Unforetuneately, now the PHP site assistant will not connect to the server - it either says the publishing engine is not running (it is), or that the server is not responding (it does). Admin console works just fine. Our existing PHP sites that used filemaker under Snow Leopard also don't work - hence my thought that I should re-do a site using the assistant, get the changes and apply it to ours. Anyone else had similar issues, and successes in fixing this problem? Its a r…

Hi, When logging in to a file hosted by FMServer10 as [Data Entry Only] user, the first thing I get is "Your access privileges do not allow you to perform this action" and it won't allow me to open the file. However, I can login successfully if I login as [Full Access] user. I initially thought that it is a result of my startup script so I disabled it but i'm still getting the error upon login. Also, there is no issue on all both accounts when I stop the hosting and open the file directly. Anyone has encountered this problem? Any ideas?

Hi, Today I started up my server admin console, and the overview screen reported that "an error was encountered communicating with the server" and the Web server panel is red. I have two remote locations that connect to FileMaker over the WAN. This has been working relatively well for years. For the last 3 days we have been having major problems. I have a script I run on my computer (Mac) to work on some hosted files that I access via VPN. (VPN=Virtual Private Network software that encrypts data across internet between my computer and server.) The script touches many records, and takes a long time to run because of VPN. (I don't want to rewrite the script as a server script.) I am able to use Remote Desktop Connection to handle the server (Windows OS). One idea I had, was to run the script using a FM client on the server that runs FM Server. My theory, is that the script should run faster locally versus going across VPN. In general, is it safe to run FM client (v11 advanced) on the server that runs FM …

I have a number of scheduled scripts on my server. Two of them say (right now) that they are "Running" even though they are not (there is no client for the schedule in the clients list). One schedule has a time limit of 10 minutes and has been "running" for about 20 minutes. The other schedule has at time limit of 20 minutes and has been "running" since August 30th. Because the server thinks they are running, it is unable to actually get them to run, thus the data they are meant to update is not being updated. Can anyone help me stop these scripts without bringing down the server? Is bring it down the only option?

Hi. I quick question that i think i already know the answer to, but its nice to be 100% certain. When accessing a filemaker server database either thru a remote computer or a iphone how much of the database is downloaded/cashed on the device? Lets say I have a 1gb database, would that take longer to load then a 5mb one if I access a table with the same amount of records? reason: The reason for asking is that im thinking of using container fields for project images/files and they might become quite many after a few years. I have an application in development that I just moved to a new server. I am developing with the PHP API on FM Server 11. The server is a Quad Core Xeon 3.3 and is running nothing but FMS11 on 2008R2 Web Server. When I am retrieving a recordset the CPU barely goes above 27%. When looking at Firebug the largest part of the load time when searching records is about 3-5 seconds for the initial response which corresponds directly with the CPU Usage. This isn't too bad, but the server is under almost no usage. When this goes to production could this 5 seconds into 20 OR does FM use a little more of the processor under heavier loads?? It stands to reason that i…

Hi, this may sound like a dumb question but on closer inspection it is not. Can I make a button in my client side Filemaker Solution that invokes a Server Side Script -in the same way as if I would execute it in the Server Admin Console- by choosing "Execute Script/Shedule"? My Server Side script imports from an SQL Source into my filemaker. This is setup nicely on the FM Server and works fine (System DSN Set Up). If I could also invoke that via a button in my client solution, I could save myself setting up System DSNs on all client machines who wanto push that button occasionally. So! Is there a way to invoke, with a button in my FM Solution…

Hi. Ive built a system on a single filemaker pro 11 edition and would like to test it in a server enviroment. Hi, I'm struggling for hours with a Filemaker Go connection, I'm going crazy here so any help will be appreciated... Here is the problem: I have FileMaker Server 11 running, on Windows 7, with a database, Clients.fp7, uploaded an opened. If I use FileMaker Pro (on the same computer) and try to open a remote database, no problem, I can find the host (FM Server) and my database Clients.fp7. This is how I can be sure the database is accessible. The issue comes when I want to open the database from FileMaker Go. When I look for hosts I can find my Server without any issues, but when I connect to it FM Go says there is no database on the host... One more point.…

I'm not sure whether this is the place to post this, but here goes. I have written a solution for my sole trader business. I would like to be able to access it when on the road from my ipad, iphone and laptop but without having to keep all or any in sync, as such. I tried dropbox and the whole thing nearly fell apart when I couldn't work out which was syncing and who was on first. No I'm musing that maybe if I uploaded the solution to "the cloud" I could access and add data in a browser type solution from where ever I happen to be........... Can this be done? How so? cheers

We have FileMaker Server 5.5 running on a MacOSX machine, serving FMP8.5 clients on Windows (Vista and XP) and Max (OS9, OSX) machines. We need a new Windows machine, which will be Windows 7, and therefore will have to purchase FMP11. The question is, will the FMP11 on the new Windows machine be able to use the existing remote files without messing anything up for everyone else? I don't want to develop using FMP11, just use it as a client to enter data into existing databases created in FMP8.5. Thanks.

I currently serve over the LAN on TCP/IP and wireless with FMS on an i7 workstation running Windows 7 Professional to approx 10 FMP clients. It seems to work well. I would now like to also serve via IWP to customers over the internet (maybe 20 or 30 at a time max). I will therefore upgrade to FMSA and have been suggested to move to Windows Server 2008 R2 at the same time. Which version of Windows Server 2008 R2 should I get (ignoring purchase price)? My options are Web Server, Standard, Itanium, Enterprise or Datacentre.

Hi I have searched myself blue in the face looking for a post about this but unable to find anything. Can some point me to a previous post or if you know how i can solve this problem. I have FMS 8 running on an xp machine service pack 3. I have one folder ( HRS) that contains filemaker files and is shown in FMS 8 console fine. I have closed the files in console and duplicated the folder and renamed it ( newFiles) and placed some new files in this folder. I have gone to console and refreshed but this new folder does not show. I have restarted the machine and this also does not show the new folder in the console. I have checked the security on the folders and th…

We are running FMP 11 Server on Windows Server 2008, with FMP11 Clients I have a script that I have developed to take a daily snapshot of two related tables in a single Filemaker database by directly importing records from the primary tables to separate snapshot tables. It works file as a client side script, but fails when I run it as a scheduled script with an error 100 (file not found) on the Import Records step. It seems that the server does not 'see' it's own files as a valid source for importing - I've tried specifying the source as a local file file:/data.fp7 and also as a networked file fmnet:/nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn/data.fp7 but get the error 100 in both cas…

We upgraded from Windows Server 2003 to 2008 R2 64bit and can't bring the server back working again. The admin console downloads the java webstart file "admin_console_init_webstart.jnlp" and hangs (see java console log below). I shut down the entire firewall (2399, 5003, 5013, 16000, 16001, 16004, 16006, 16008, 16010, 16012, 16014, 16016, 16018, 50003 are open over TCP outbound). Is Filemaker Pro Advanced compatible with Windows Server 2008? I am attempting to set up a small extranet to share a Filemaker Pro databases with a small number of clients who will access the database using both client versions of Filemaker and also and browsers to access Instant Web Publishing (which is unavailable on Filemaker Server). I am able to run FM Pro Advanced version 11 on the Windows Server 2008 but clients are unable to "see" the FM databases hosted on the server.

I have always run Filemaker Server on whatever old Mac we had, currently a 4+ year old Mac Pro. I am kicking around the idea of getting a Windows 7 machine to host our Filemaker database on. So I'd like to ask if anyone can give me suggstions on what to avoid, etc. I plan on getting an machine built and run the database off an SSD, with good and regular backups, as I currently do on the Mac side. I presume Windows 7 Professional 32 bit is the best way to go on a new machine? Are there any major differences in FM Server Mac version on Windows? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I'm not sure whether I should be starting a new post, but a significant problem I had a couple of months ago (http://fmforums.com/...__fromsearch__1) with frequent interruptions (every 5-10 minutes, though sometimes the pattern is erratic) has come into sharper focus, and I need a strategy that will lead to a diagnosis, especially since I am committed to a deadline of August 1 for an expanded version of my database to a significantly larger group of first-time users, who will be very shortly be committing to FM software on their end. My IT person has put a lot of time into diagnosing and researching the problem but hasn't been able to figure out what's wrong, though…

What is the best solution to modify a db hosted on FileMaker Sever? This would be done after hours so no users would be connected. Can you modify the database from a connected work station? Should you pull the database off the server, make the changes and then upload it back? Should you have a copy of FileMaker Pro/Advanced on the server and work directly at the server? We have external backups of our databases which I could work on then upload back to the server if needed. Just not sure what can and cannot be done to modify the hosted db. Thank you, Michell Logan

Our company has utilized FM for over a decade, we are an organization that is scattered throughout Southern CA. They have always deployed/produced FM for remote users over a leased line (Frame Relay -- now MPLS) via Citrix. Which I believe was the recomended way on FM Pro 6 and lower. We are now on FM Pro 11 with FM 10 Server Advanced. We are trying to utilize "Containers" in our FM Solution and streamline a process for our workflow. Well we need it to talk to an applicaton that is installed locally on the clients and not on the Terminal/Citrix Servers. So we have one remote site with about 10 remote users and installed FMPro 11 locally on their workstations and st…

Here is a printscreen of the script : BTW where can I find the things to know about server scripting? Example : You need a counter in a loop otherwise the script will return an error.

I have finally gotten some time to see if there is a way to use what appears to be a way to notify clients that an update is available from their client, AND have FileMaker Server send the update to them for installation. It would appear that each client has a preference where a plug-in to auto update can be checked off, but the configure button is greyed out. Also, maybe I need a Plug-in on the server side to make this work, but cannot find one in the files I have for installation. Is there such a thing, and where is this plug-in. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Forum! I have 2 Questions about authentication please. (1) I have three files hosted on an FM Server, A, B and C. All three files use External Authentication with the Domain Server. There are 2 groups of users in the Active Directory and both are correctly defined in each of the three FM Files: fmsadmin and fmsusers. The external Authentication works fine. As an identified Windows User, I open file A and that opens file B and C and it works fine, no passwords are asked, users are in the files with the right privelege set. It works for all users. Only; In the LOG of FM Server I get a funny message when the Computer tries to open …

Hi two seperate questions. Q1: I have a filemaker 8.5 Server. Im upgrading its licence to v11.0 license. I want to use a new second computer for the 11.0 version. Q: Can I install the new 11.0 alongside the old 8.5 Server on the same Network without getting a serial number clash on both and hence both servers not working? (8.5 Server = win2003 Server, 11.0 Server= win2008r2 Server). In other words does an 8.5 serial number clash with a 11.0 serial number from the same licence? The plan is of course to switch off the 8.5 Server after the sucessful install of the new server. Q2: I have a script that assigns some variables and loops through some records, its q…

Does anyone know what this message means? I'm running Server 9 with email notifications to be sent when there's a failure or warning. I keep getting emails from the server saying "FMServer Warning 661 Client "so and so" authentication failed on database. When I ask the client if they're having trouble logging in or if they misspelled the account name or password, they say no, that they're not having any problems at all. Thanks in advance!

I keep getting error 212 (invalid user account/password) when trying to run an import script, server side, on a hosted file. A bit of background: I have 2 hosted files, a Main Data file and a Data Import file. I have a server side script sequence to automatically import the data from Data Import to the Main Data file. A system script pauses the Data Import file, copies it to the Server Documents folder, and the resumes the file prior to executing the FM Script. The FM script in the Main Data file then imports data from various tables in the Data Import file into other tables in the Main Data file. The script runs perfectly if I manually execute it but it…

The same on Windows 2003 R2 Standard. No solutions on forums. In Standard Windows 2003 installation and looking on the FileMaker Server folder, I found 3 files with wrong extensions. These are: server.pem root.pem FMStrs.dls I changed the extension to this files to dll server.dll root.dll FMStrs.dll After this and rebooting the server machine, the conecction was OK. Tomorrow i'll try this solution on Enterprise version of windows. Hope this helps someone.

This is a joint message from Wim Decorte and Steven H. Blackwell. We have been seeing a number of reports that indicate there is considerable confusion about the new server side import and export capabilities of FileMaker® Server 10 and FileMaker® Server 10 Advanced. We want to assist developers by clarifying how this new feature is supposed to work. First and foremost, there are only 2 folders that FileMaker Server can use to export to or import from: 1. the Documents Folder in the root level of FileMaker Server. 2. A temporary folder created (and deleted) for the instance of the script schedule This apparent limitation addresses permissions issues in…

It looks like this FMP10 server has fallen victim to the Java Update, so I am unable to fully manage the server. In particular, I need to change the SMTP Host settings as the ISP Host settings have changed - one of the databases generates eMail automatically, er well it used to... Is this possible to do via the Command Line Interface? I can't see an obvious command that would allow me to define or change this. If this isn't possible, how do I install just the necessary Java components of the Admin Console on another computer which hasn't got the Jave 'update' issue. If I run the server installation, it seems to want to install everything and there is no obviou…

We have a big problem with our clients unable to connect to FM Server v11 after about an hour of use. When this occurs, multiple iterations of the users appear in the Administrator panel. Sometimes these users can be forcibly disconnected, other times they cannot. The only way we have found to remedy the problem is through a reboot of the server, which is not practical since we deploying in public areas for time limited applications. Even then, the IPads are immediately seeking reconnection and the problem sometimes repeats almost immediately after the server reboot. The problem seems to originate with iPad connections. I've been trying to decide whether to purchase Filemaker Server or FMS Advanced and it looks like I'll be basing my decision on how much I can do with the PHP Site Assistant. I'm getting comfortable with the SuperContainer plugin fo…
