Is it possible to give a user that does not have Full Access a scripted routine for creating accounts? Rather than use FMP's native privilege routines, I've scripted my own which enables my client's administrator to quickly enable/disable accounts and to assign much more detailed access permissions than FMP's. I'm also using custom menus so that end users have access only to their own permitted commands. All users other than myself are assigned to my own "Default" privilege set. That set is virtually identical to "Full Access"; the only difference being layouts: "all view only". Through the scripted permissions system, only the administrator has access to …

  4. Hello - I have done a search in the forums and cannot find a topic with this specific issue so here goes... We have FM Server 8 Advanced and have frequent and annoying problems with users' web login accounts showing as "password expired". We're using FM authentication as we cannot use the Windows auth for these logins. Now, we're not entirely sure if the problem occurs randomly or after a period of account inactivity but it's becoming a problem and I can't figure out how to solve it. Is there some sort of inactivity expiration built in? Can it be modified or disabled entirely? Any ideas? Also, would upgrading to Server 10 help at all? I'd be ha…

When I tried to open the old file in FMP 7 it asks for a password. I tried the old file's password, but it won't accept that. Why is it asking for this in the first place, and what do I do to get FMP 7 to let me into this file? Thanks

  8. So, with an update to our database systems also comes an update to our security. Some of our databases have data that is accessible by everyone, while also having data that is only accessible to a few. The protected data is always on a seperate layout, and that layout is protected by the user privileges. That's fine. The problem is that, for each database, there is a "home screen" which links to different layouts for different activities, and if a user clicks a link to a layout that they don't have the privileges to view, they get the giant NO ACCESS message, but no way to get back (we would like to remove the status area for the users. Not sure where to put this so I will start here. Is anyone willing or able to discuss PCI_DSS issues? VeriSign quoted $35,000 for the certification process. Our application uses the VeriSign SDK and does not store the card number or CVV so the fee seems to be a bit excessive. Canadian gateways are requiring proof of compliance by Jan 1 2010. Has anyone heard that US gateways will follow suit? What are others doing in the spirit of PCI_DSS compliance? I hope we can have a frank discussion on these issues as they affect many of our FileMaker business solutions.

I have no choice to share our local network with one company(no chance of separating it). Hi I have just converted my single file solution to a Separation Model and the first interesting challenge is the accounts and passwords. I have 5 different access groups (privilege sets) and am happy with the handling of these. I have an accounts table and can control changes to privileges and passwords through that but I do not see a way to prevent the user from changing his password at the login screen. If he changes it in the Interface table then the backend will be out of step. I thought the tab in privileges might hide the change password button but it doesn't. I feel sure I am missing something here. Any ideas?

Here’s the issue: A peripheral department in the organization, one that serves some of those already in the database’s PARTICIPANTS table, is now asking to use the solution to track their participants as they transition through their own programs. A simple change might be to give this new player access to the server and allow them to log in just like the original clients. The problem is, they really shouldn’t have access to ALL the PARTICIPANTS records, only those PARTICIPANTS they serve. Also, the original clients fo…

Is there any way to secure a database, after a user is logged in, from access through external data source by another database? It has come to my attention that creating a new local database (L) while logged in to another server hosted database (S) will give the user access to all data, scripts and value lists as enabled by the user's privileges in S. In other words, the local database (L) is implicitly inheriting the open database's user privilege set. How can this type of sharing be locked down/stopped? Thanks.

I know nothing about them, except that I think I need one for a solution I'm working on, and I don't know how to get past one crucial hurdle.... What I THINK they can be used for is to keep track of who is logged into a database at a specific time and to provide access control based on privilege sets... So, for example if person A has created record 1 in the database, and person B logs in, person b cannot delete record 1 because it is somehow marked as created by person A.... That's one example of how I'd like to use an Accounts table.... Is this re…

I need a little clarification on how Filemaker handles users moving between databases. For our system, a Main Menu is used to allow users access to the various databases they need. Each user has his or her own login name and password for this main menu, and once there, they can click on links that run scripts to open other databases as needed. They have accounts on these databases as well, and it usually logs them in to those databases seamlessly behind the scenes. But not always. However, one area in particular - Telesales - needs access to a very restricted interface only. They need to be able to open the customer database and work from there. I have a database that was made for just one user, but know I'm looking into making it for 5-8 users that can't records form each other. I have learned to make accounts and privilege set that use limited view for table records by calculation of "Account = Get (AccountName)" where Account is the name of the owner of the record. But if user1 logs in he sees a lot of records where is in every field. How is the best way to hide these records? I have layouts that use table views and form views and they are accessed by buttons, so I think I could make a script that loops through every record and omit records that the users doesn't own. Is there another way?…

The first would be User, this role would be able to create a new record, but not be able to delete a record, only be able to chance certain fields, as well be able to view the reports that will be created and be able to search. I would also like this User account to, when the db is opened, to display in full screen (I have used Kiosk mode, but the Browse window still appears). The second account is an Admin account that can do all of the above but not change/create/delete any layout or script. The third is a "super" Admin account that can do everything. The scenario too help explain further is in …

I have an issue that may be caused by improper Privileges settings, or by an improper Custom Menu settings. Therefore I've attached a screenshot showing how each is set up. I'm using FMP9. The intention is to provide the user with keyboard shortcuts for some of the on screen buttons. Therefore I've created a "Go To" menu (and an Actions menu) that consists solely of script calls. With current settings both menus present but with greyed out items. In Privileges I've tried setting Scripts to "All Executable" and also "All Modifiable." Both don't work. On the Custom Menu side I'm assuming FMP will automatically remap the keyboard shortcuts calls to the Comman…

The Recovery Function and the Consistency Check remain in the new FileMaker® Pro 10 much as they did in FileMaker® Pro 9, but with some highly useful and important modifications and additions. A totally new feature in FileMaker Pro 10’s Recovery options is the ability to bypass a start-up script or layout that might be causing a file to crash. A frequent cause of this unwanted behavior is a corrupted graphic on the splash screen or an opening script stuck in an infinite loop. Provided that a developer or administrator has a [Full Access] account for the file, he or she can invoke this option. This will bypass the start-up script and take the developer to a newly …

One of the more interesting new features in the just released FileMaker® Pro 10 allows users to customize the newly redesigned Status Area by dragging icons into the Status Area and also by deleting such icons. There may be circumstances however where such actions could have unexpected or unanticipated consequences for the business processes that the database is supposed to address and manage. Developers have some options to manage these activities and their concomitant results. 1. For any given Privilege Set, removing a privilege in the file, for example, printing, will disable the Print icon a user may drag into the Status Area. The icon will still be there,…

I want to give them full access to the application, but I want to keep a user account that I can access in case they have any kind of problems. It never seemed to work right and I gave up. For the past year, i have had no problem accessing the file. Then suddenly today, it won't let me into the file. It is asking for user ID and password. I have tried all the likely suspects but cannot get into the file. I haven't done anything that should have caused this and the file won't open on either of my two MACs. Hi everyone, I asked for some help a few days ago regarding the locking and unlocking of records. I have that working to a certain extent, though a problem has just been pointed out to me. When a record is locked, editing is limited - so you cant edit the record until it is unlocked. Deleting is also limited - this too cannot be performed until the record is unlocked. However, I have a portal linking to some related records, and I can still create related records even when the record is locked!! however, I cant change the privilige to be "no" for create, otherwise no one can create records even when it is unlocked... Hi Everyone, A while back I was searching through this forum (I think!) and I found an article on record locking. I used it in the database Im working on to provide an option to lock a record from being available for editing. As such I now have the following scenario: Anyone can press a "lock" button that sets a field to "1". In the user privilidge sets, it says that for all users other than the admin account, if that field is set to "1", then editing is not allowed (deleting is restricted altogether). However, my problem arises with the need to unlock this record again in the future. I made another button called unlock, and made it set the field to "0" whi…

They can only see/read records associated with other offices. I'm assuming each user needs to be a member of a group associated with that office and you set the permissions based on group membership. On the flip side...sometimes accounts get transferred to another office so I would need to change the permissions to that office. Thx

I thought for this I could set up a user table that holds information which users can access which records. The other way round would be to write into the record which users can open it. I thought I’d create a field that contains all the IDs of the users that are allowed to read it. I prefer this approach. A script or even better a filtered portal could restrict the access. May I ask if anybody has some experience with this kind of record access management? Is this a practicable way of approaching my in…

However, the user accounts are not in sync. The solutions contain a mix of externally-authenticated accounts and internally-created FileMaker accounts.
