FileMaker Server 13

Deploy, Configure, Manage a FileMaker Pro Server

  1. Started by Rick Whitelaw,

Hi, I've read every article and help file I could find about this subject before posting. In the event I need to restore from a backup (I would assume from a progressive backup since this happens every ten minutes) which file should I copy and upload to the server? The files in the progressive backup folder all seem a couple of days old according to the OS time stamps. My regularly scheduled backups run daily. Perhaps I should change this to hourly, but it seems with progressive backups running every ten minutes that these files would be the most recent. Rick.

  2. This Find issue started yesterday, after working successfully for more than a year as part of a script step. Now, this sort of Find does not work at all: I have a calculation field that stores a number, its value is derived by subtracting from a Number field a combination of other Number fields and Calculation fields that produce numbers. The value of this field is correct (when you look at the output in Browse mode, the number is the correct number), but when I attempt to perform a Find, the results are not what I searched for. For example, ten of the records have a negative value for this field, but a Find of "< 0" returns no records. Or, a Find for "5" returns a…

Hi, Ive been searching for a solution without any luck, or maybe this just isn't how a web viewer is suppose to work, however... From my filemaker database I would like the user to click on a button whilst in Kiosk mode and bring up a window containing a web page where they can interact and then close it down which works fine, however the page won't refresh unless i right click+control and click refresh (web page contains a calendar so can see its not refreshing). Is there a way for this to be done automatically? Im using... Set Web Viewer in my script and have tried Reload also. Thanks in advance Tom

  7. FileMaker, Inc. today released an important update to FileMaker Server 13 that addresses a potential vulnerability. I strongly recommend that all server administrators and hosting companies install this update. You can find more information at http://thefmkb.com/13829. Also, please see http://thefmkb.com/13585 for more information on the subject of FileMaker Security Updates. Steven

  8. I have a test server FMSA 13.0.4 running on Windows Server 2012 Standard. Our back office folks have IE locked down such that it's unusable. I'm having to use Chrome to run the Admin Console, which is fine. However, when I try to Open Test or Start Page from the Server menu, I get a security certificate warning and can't proceed further as it appears to be trying to use IE. I can copy the URL and paste it into Chrome an it gives me the warning, but lets me proceed.. Is there a way to keep the menu selection from defaulting to IE? I already have Chrome set as the default browser. It's a pain and very clunky. Meanwhile, I'm going to see if the backend folks can kill a b…

I maintain many FM13 Servers and this Administrator Groups feature is quite helpful to our users. Â I am having a problem I can't seem to figure out. Â We just spun up 3 new FM13 servers and I can't quite get the Administrator Group page buttons to work right. Â On the older servers, when I create a Admin Group and users click on the FileMaker Pro or WebDirect buttons FileMaker launches correctly, locates the database and pops it open, same with WebDirect. Â On the new servers we just spun up, FileMaker launches but it can't find the database. Â Same with WebDirect - the browser launches but it can't find the database. Hallo I recently changed to FileMaker Server 13 on my mac mini, which was already running Mac OSX Server. I had to change the FileMaker ports in order for both services to work at the same time (I don't know if this has anything to do with my php problem...). The problem is that my php files can't find the FileMaker.php file. When I try to use require_once('FileMaker.php'); the php crashes. I store my files in exactly the same location as I used to do with FM Server 12. The files however are on a website on the Mac OSX Server... Kind regards, Rugen Heidbuchel

The FMS 13 server is a 2008 R2 SP1 VM on a Windows 2012 server, at the FMS aspect seems to work just fine overall. I have configured on FMS console to have the Errors and Warnings to come to the email address designated, and this works fine. 18. I am trying to do an "Insert Picture" script step on a Server and not getting any results. The script works fine (but too slow for the volume of images) on a client. This seems like a perfect case for "Perform Script on Server" but it is not working. The server is 13.0.3.300 on Windows 7. User Account Control is off. The JPGs are on a file server. The server has access to the files. The drive is mapped exactly the same as a client. The script provides the correct context (layout and find) for the import, but the server is not finding the images. Is there something else I need to do on the server to make this work? Thanks, Paul Samuelson

  19. On Server 13.0.1 on a Mac, is it possible to run scheduled backups that only backup the databases and not the RC_Data_FMS folder? In our case, RC_Data_FMS is a huge folder (6+ GB). Everything in it would be easy to reproduce if necessary so we don't need to back it up as often as the databases themselves. It just contains thumbnails for images that are stored elsewhere.

We have a Filemaker solution that uses 3 related databases (FMP12 advanced) . We are considering a FMS13 server (I guess this hosts FMP12 too). The databases are on our Google drive (we never use them simutaneously). I don't want to loose the existing relationships between the different databases when moving to the server. Can I redefine the location of the Filemaker data sources without loosing any relationships? Thank you for reading and answering my question.

  23. I'm running Filemaker Server behind a NAT firewall in my data centre, and it mostly works fine. The server is bound to a 192.168.1.xxx IP address, and the firewall which it's behind, uses NAT to forward the external public IP address to the internal IP address which the server is on. All this works fine, except that on the Group Start Page, the "WEBD" buttons link to the internal 192.168.1.xxx IP numbers, which obviously don't work. Just wondering if there's any way around this, without reconfiguring the firewall to not use NAT.

The file is currently not on FM Server, but I wish to propose to my company that we get FM Server and upload this database on to it. In my readings I have not come across any potential problems with uploading these large container field data. I wish to store the images externally, with open storage. Does anyone foresee any problems with this move to FM Server? Thank you for any guidance or suggestions.

In fact just the word “server” kind of makes me break out in a cold sweat. I also am fighting an uphill battle with getting FileMaker to be accepted by the company that I work for. I have an issue at one of our customers, where clients are not seeing updates in records from each other. Updates from committed records are not pushed to the client, and/or local cache is not refreshed. Even a script with Commit Record, Refresh Window [Flush cached join results] and a Flush Cach to Disk script steps does not update the data, This is particulary annoying as the application has a realtime planning module. The issue appears at some intervals, and only restarting the client often resolves the issue for a while, but then again there is a risk that the issue reappears. Restarting the server resolves the issue for a few weeks, but then again it start to a…

Hi everyone, I have a fm13 solution I want to deploy in our department. I was looking into fms13 but the pricing seems steep at $180/ connection. Management will obviously be concerned about cost when roughly 30-40 users will be accessing the Database. FMS12 seems to be more cost effective with IWB but I don't know how much better Web direct would be compared to IWB. Some users will only need access to one layout with a few fields and not the remainder of the DB, so getting a client license for such users would just seem a waste. So my question is , since I made the solution on fmpa13 , would running it on fms12 really restrict the fmp13 features? Even if all the …

Two days ago I believe my place had a power failure or brown-out. Since then I haven't been able to connect. Today I had a friend go over to my place and, sure enough, the server machine was off. She restarted it and rebooted the Airport Extreme as well. No dice. My question: will FMS restart on its own in the circumstances described above? Or is this quite different than a proper Restart? Thanks.

Note that this is testing for a positive result, not looking for a negative result (like, that a file isn't open because of problem). There are a couple of ways that come to mind: Write an OS-level script to get the filenames and status from fmsadmin at the command line, send them to a text file and deal with that appropriately. Another way to do it is have an FM script do something like check that each file is open on the host and record the results. Either way seems like more work than it should be. Is…

  56. Hope my experience can help some searching soul out there. I got there in the end. Recently, we upgraded our FMS 12 setup to 13. In the process we had to switch off Server.app's Websites function which we used to serve our php web pages through https with certificates from an external authority (Comodo). I moved our existing php files to the httpsRoot subfolder, which is where they should go. As expected, the URL in the browser was still confirmed as starting with 'https'. But the https connection now came up as untrusted by our own (and our customers'!!) browsers and our expensive green padlock had gone. The FMS 13 Getting Started Guide just says to refer to 'you…

  57. Hello all! This is an annoying issue. I am trying to setup a container data path in FMS 13 on OS X 10.9. The directory is on a FW drive. No matter what I try, the server saves the files in FMS /Library subfolders. Here are the steps that I have taken: 1. Set the container data path in FMS to filemaker:/FMMedia/Media/ and successfully saved the changes. 2. Made sure the drive (FMMedia) and the folder (Media) have full read/write permissions for the fm server user, and even made it the owner. To test, I even tried setting the permission to read/write for all users. 3. Set up the manage containers with the correct path. 4. If I test the file…

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask this question and if it is please let me know: I currently have 2 filemaker solutions hosted by FMS13 on a dedicated server my hospital division purchased. Currently it only runs the filmmaker server program. My division also wants to run an oracle database off the same server but I am wondering if it is a good idea to do that. Problem is purchasing another dedicated machine for the oracle database is very costly. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas or tips about running two different programs on a dedicated server simultaneously. Sorry I am new to this whole server networking stuff. Thanks

  62. Hello all, I want to have fm server be able to store files via a container on a network share point so that computers that are outside our network be able to view them. At the same time not be able to view other files that are private. I got all this working on a version of fm12, then ported it over to fm server 12 to only find out about the limitation of storing container data in the same folder as the fm files. I did some research and found other people where having this issue, but all the posts where old. Does anyone know. a. Is there a work around for fm server 12? b. Is this now supported on fm 13 server? Thanks Drew

  63. I recently installed Filemaker Server 13 on a windows machine. I added my database successfully (i think). I am able to access the database from that same windows machine using the connect to a remote database option in FileMaker pro 13. However, i am unable to access the file from any other machine in my lab which are all macs. i get an error "The file “test.fmp12” could not be opened. Either the host is not available, or the file is not available on that host." Additionally, i am able to connect to the server via the mac 'connect to server' program and confirm that the file exists.

  64. Our company currently uses FileMaker Server 11 Advanced on our server and all of our Mac's and PC's run FileMaker Pro 11 Advanced. We also use SuperContainer and DocuBin and the plug-in CNS Audit. Last year we were going to upgrade to FileMaker Server 12 and never got around to it so we are still using 11. We would like to upgrade to FileMaker Server 13 and also upgrade all of our Mac's and PC's to FileMaker Pro 13 Advanced. Does anyone know what issues I might run into in upgrading to FileMaker Server 13 considering we use SuperContainer, DocuBin, and CNS Audit? Thanks, Susie

Hello Board! So, I finally made the jump from FMPA hosting a shared file to FMS13. I have installed it, everything says that it's working, but I can't get a file to be hosted. I have FMPA13 on a client machine with network access but using the 'Upload to Server' option doesn't show the actual server on the list, only my local machine. I have tried copying the file into the Data/Databases directory where the sample db is and it doesn't show up in the Console. I'm a bit stuck! Can anyone help me, please? Thank you, H

  66. I have some files with a FM hosting service and those files have externally stored container data. The host had a problem yesterday, and once the problem was 'fixed', all links to the externally stored files were broken, i.e. VerifyContainer() returns false, I can see the image/icon in the field but export field contents is greyed out. I have a backup with all of the RC_Data, but of course I don't want to manually re-insert a couple of thousand files into container fields, and neither does my client. Any suggestions? I find this odd because my own FMS installation upgraded from FMS12 to FMS13 and didn't lose the connections to the externally stored data.

  74. Does anyone have any tips for renaming fields that are connected through ESS? According to the ESS tech brief, it seems like this should be possible without an issue: So if I'm just renaming the field, the unique key should remain the same, right? When I tried it and synced the tables again, the old field was changed to type "Unknown" and the new name was added as a separate field? Is there any nice way to do this and keep field linkings in scripts and layouts? (Details: The files are hosted by FMS13 on Mac, connected through ActualODBC to MySQL)

  75. First off I really like FM13, the features are great and WebDirect does a great job when compared to IWP. However the new pricing model is not easy to swallow for solutions already using IWP and FMGo to any significant extent and I kind of feel screwed over on my maintenance contract. Our FMSA12 licenses got converted to FMS13 with 25 concurrent Go / WebDirect connections. This is unhelpful when we have one solution currently running around 55 concurrent FMGo and IWP connections at peak. 'Plan ahead for software upgrades by locking in today's price for tomorrows technology' is how FileMaker describe the benefits of their maintenance agreements in the blurb. …

Apologies if this is a bit of an obvious question: I run a script across a found set to change the status flag of each record (The job can now be invoiced). This found set is itself defined by a status flag (The job can now be delivered). My concern is that while this invoice script is running, another user could be changing the delivered status and the script could miss a record. Is there a way to temporarily lock the whole database to everyone except one user - so that the script can be run without any other users modifying any data?

Hi, A simple question really. I use FMPA 13 and FMS 13. I have one container field in this solution. It contains an image I get from the net. For example, if a production is Book of Mormon, I download an image and it is displayed on various layouts that pertain to that particular production. The images are stored as references only in a folder I happen to call "Logos". Locally this works fine. I grab an image and drag it into the logos folder then insert the pic into the container field of the record of the production. The folder "Logos" also resides on the server machine. My question? 91. Am I right in my understanding that currently the best practice would be to keep within a separate folder either the standard one or a user one instead of incorporating them into the database? That would make the database file smaller and less prone to corruption, as well as more manageable. My understanding also is that at the moment you can only keep such data in the same volume as the server is in, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, After reading the advice from a knowledgeable poster here I started making sure there was no user logged into the host machine. I understand this is the safest way to use fm server. This is all fine in that FMS runs fine without any user logged into the host machine. However, I have a drive attached to the host machine (usb3) that serves as a backup destination for regular and progressive backups. If no user with sufficient permissions is logged into the host machine, the Admin Console reports the folder on the backup drive as an invalid path. Thinking this might be a permissions issue I've tried to work in that direction. So far no luck. I must be logged into…

  94. Started by Rick Whitelaw,

Probably a silly question, but . . . When I run a solution locally on my desktop machine I have a closer script that saves a copy as to a different location. This is to avoid Time Machine backing up open files. I exclude the folder where my active files reside from TM backups and allow backup of the copies. Works fine. When the files are hosted however, this command is not available (and throws error 3).Why not? There's likely an obvious answer I'm not seeing. The hosted files can save PDF files on the client machine for example. Just curious why the hosted file can't save a copy to a location of my choice. Of course I'm using the FMS backup scheme, both progressive and h…

Is there a way to set global fields and commit by performing the script on the server? If not I know I can get this done by another method. Rick.

Hi, This is likely old news to many, but since it bit me I thought I'd pass it along. This week I deployed FMS for the first time. It's my first experience working with FM on a network. Most of my energy has gone into making sure the files had redundant backups and some security issues. Over the last two days I noticed that a couple of files were taking forever to close. Both these files had "Closer" scripts that called a number of Cleanup scripts, each of which involved potentially substantial finds. On a powerful desktop machine the files would close in the blink of an eye. On the network one of them took two or three minutes to close. So I ran the script debugg…

In the FMS 13 Getting Started Guide it staes that a folder on a network drive can be designated as the default backup destination or the destination for progressive backups (different folder) as long as the drive is always mounted. Since my server machine, a Mac Mini, never sleeps and the network drive is always mounted I thought there wasn't any reason not to use the drive. However whenever I try to designate a folder on this drive as a destination admin console will not save the configuration. The reason I want to do this is that the server machine has a relatively small drive (500gb) and the network drive is 4tb. I don't want to limit my backups to ten or twenty insta…

Hoping there is a solution to this. I host my vertical market solution on my own servers for my clients and I run updates once a month. This is because I am running on the same machine as the FMSA 13, which I need to do because Im using the command line to control the server for this process.
