  2. Hello, I'm setting up a FileMaker worker machine to provide web access to our FileMaker Server (version 16), going through a PFSense firewall. I have a NIC on the worker facing the Internet, and another going to the OPT2 NIC on the firewall. I thought it would be fairly simple to direct that through the firewall and onto our private network, but I can't even ping the firewall from the worker machine. Wondering if there's anyone here familiar with this setup, or perhaps just a good idea in general what I should do here. My networking experience is limited. Thanks, Ron

Does anybody know of such a product or how it may be achieved? I have an interesting product idea that doesn't _seem_ to have been addressed yet, and the above functionality would be the engine behind it all. Please advise. Comments welcome. Thanks Greg

Both remote offices complain that the FM solution is slow when showing records and other operations (not even mention showing a report). They are using 4 Mb and 10 Mb symmetrical DSL lines. Has anyone had any experience using WAN optimization hardware, e.g. Silverpeak, with FileMaker? The basic idea is you have two dedicated machines at both physical locations of the WAN which inspect the data and cache it, so the next time the user requests the same data, they pull it from the local machine rather than across the WAN. Does this sound like something that would help FileMaker performance? My IT department is recommending it but I'm skeptical. Thanks in advance. -Nate

Just curious, I have dealt with Databases in the past that don't react too well when using a client offsite through a VPN connection. Something about latency and packet drops causing corruption. Does Filemaker suffer from this? I want to have a Central Filemaker Server, access via VPN, then using the "open remote" access the database. Is this risky? Or does the fmnet protocol over a vpn connection work well in preventing corruption?

The solution we are runningat the moment is an old warhorse in FMP 6.0. I am currently building a shiny new model, but am wondering if the old one is slow due to newtork issues, or if it was programmed by an idiot (me). Hi. Let me start off by saying that I have never tried doing this. So, basically I am a total noob with regards to trying to access a machine remotely. I am piggybacking off this post and other past posts. I am not trying to allow users to connect to FileMaker remotely. What I am trying to do is just get into a client's machine so that when there is an issue, I can remotely take over and troubleshoot. I am still unsure how to do this. I went through past posts and also tutorials from Microsoft and also this site. I did everything they asked but I still couldnt find the computer. The Setup at the client's office is very simple and basic. Its…

Hi all, if answers to this subject already have been posted affluently I'd like to apologize beforehand. Can anybody explain to me what a typical setup would look like where remote FileMaker users connect to a FileMaker Server via Windows Terminal Services? How would I setup a Terminal Service in Windows 2000/2003? Do I need Windows Server Edition or will a "regular" Windows 2000/2003 do? What exactly do I have to install within that Terminal Service? A FileMaker Client or a FileMaker Server? (It is my understanding so far from posts I saw here that the FileMaker Server resides on a separate machine and a FileMaker client goes in the Terminal Service).…

The db is located on a Mac at the office, which we all access through a VNC (Chicken), after we have first connected to a VPN. We all use Macs. Does anyone have any advice on why only one person at a time can access the db? Could it be due to our method of connection? Thanks and if I should post this in a different forum, please let m…

All, I'm developing/managing a remote inhouse db for a small design practice in an opposite time zone. It's a separated scheme [interface & Data]. The DB is up and running - so the data is live. Both sides use OSX 10.3 and FM not FM server. I'm occassionally updating the interface file as change requests come in. This is achieved as follows: - Make changes on my local file - Request [via email] the practice admin to quit FM - Update server file via a VPN setup - Request [via email] the practice admin to re-start FM The question I have is whether the quit/start of FM can be done remotely? This would make life so much easier!! Can thi…

I'm thinking: port forwarding on the router to point to the computer running FMS7; opening up (what) port(s) on the firewall, and finally, if any of the services are filtered by comcast. I'm interested in both FM Remote access, and IWP. Maybe the port should be changed to make it less of a well known port (for IWP anywy)? I am struggling with a slow remote database. After connecting to the remote database, the first time I create a new record it takes over 20 minutes to just create a new record. If I then create another record, it is relatively fast (1 sec to create). If I then close and reopen the remote database, it again takes 20 minutes to create a new record the first time. If i access the file locally, creating a new record takes less than a second every time. Is there anyway to force a log that will help me figure out what filemaker is hanging on? Me again, still playing with remote access techniques for an .fp4 database served by FMS3. Based on my observations when using larger database files, it appears as though FMS doles out an entire file to a client, and then returns alterations to the server as they are made. Is this assumption correct? Does this behavior extend to subsequent FM versions? If so, it seems like a strong argument for pruning unneccessary content out of databases that might be served this way... Thanks, --Chris
