Hi all, We previously hosted our website internally using a Windows 2003 server and our website had a client portal which linked to a FM database. We are in the process of shifting the website to an external LAMP server but do not wish to shift the FM databases off our server here. The website is being hosted on a VM with MelbourneIT, so we don't have the same amount of control as we would on our own servers. I've gone through some of the logical solutions I can think of (changing the ip address in the php files etc) however I think there must be more to it as when I try to access records through the portal I get the following: Line 138 in this file is …

Has anybody seen this before? The admin console displays IWP as being off, the "Launch Web Publishing" menu is available and the "Stop Web Publishing" menu isn't, yet Web Publishing databases can be accessed without any problem. There is just a "communication error"displayed on the admin console. Anyone know how to resolve this? I am using FMS 10.0.2.206 on a G5 running 10.5.8.

Am curious if it is possible to take a hosted database and take a full back up of it daily / weekly / monthly and rename the back up to EOD / EOW / EOM respectively for the end of period Then rehost that file, halting and removing any existing with the same name. The goal is a live hosted file with data AS of that period.

I am trying to import (or copy) the found set from one table to another on FM Server 12. On 11, I just open a layout for the source table, derive the found set, switch to a layout for the destinaiton table, import (using remote) from the source table... and only the found set of the open layout is imported. On 12, the source table has 4 records. I have created the found set that is constrained to 1 of those records. Opon import, all 4 records are transferred. Any ideas? (I have to admit, I have experienced some quirks with this in the past on 11, so it could be me)

Hello All It is time to change the IP address of my Filemaker 11 server, yet again. I am wondering if there is a way to use computer name instead of IP address for the external FM database relationships? (ex: \\computer_name instead of \\192.168.2.6) If I can get this to work, we can change the IP whenever we want, because DNS would take over. I'm thinking I may need to a 3rd party plugin, but I'm not sure. Thanks for any advice.

Hello all -- A little while back I moved from: MacOSX FM Server 10 Advanced on MacOSX ... to: FM Server 11 Advanced on Windows. My current production solution is 3 files in a Folder that all "know" about eachother. (In "External Data Sources" they reference eachother by file:xxx). In Filemaker Server 10 Advanced ... as long as your Files you wanted to "cross file server script" with were in the same folder on the same machine and you use the above "file:xxx" ... you could get away this. Well since the move to 11 and switching operating systems ... these Server Scripts fail. I can provide the error number ... if you need it ... but this exact same scripts we…

Is anyone else using anything other than Citrix Xen App to stream FM Client to Mac users so communication between FM client and FMS is on the same LAN for remote users? We're trying to get 2X Streamed App (http://www.2x.com/) to work to avoid the huge fees with Citrix Xen App. (~$300/ user to set-up & Annual Maint.), but don't have the answer yet as our issue keeps getting escalated up their support chains. It works great until you try to Print or Print Set-up... freezes. Windows Remote App 2008 R2 works great for PC users so all data transfer between client and server is in the same LAN, except that users seem to loose connectivity to their local drives an…

I'm stepping into the realm of running system level scripts on OSX and/or Windows servers and I don't know what I'm doing. I'm trying rename a timestamped backup folder to a standard name. I don't know enough to write the batch script or the shell script (would like to be able to run this on either platform), nor how to set them up so Server sees them to run on a Schedule. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks, David

Hi, My FileMaker Pro and FileMaker Go cannot find my databases hosted with FileMaker Server. The problem could be very simple, but I am not proficient in servers and have no idea of what could have gone wrong. I have installed FileMaker Server (FMS) to a server computer that also has FileMaker Pro installed. The database was uploaded with FMS, and the status was shown as Normal, with Pro, XSLT, XML and PHP checked. On the FMS Overview screen, the Database Server was only showing ODBC/JDBC as "off". The FileMaker Pro on the server computer was closed. On another computer, or on my iPads, they simply could not detect the databases at all. I tried running the …

I have a FM 11 Server Adv which has been in Production for over a year, sitting on Win 2k8 R2. I have real problems with Server Admin. It used to just not launch, despite having updated FMS to re: the Java issue. Now, every time I launch Server Admin The Deployment Assistant starts. I don't want to complete it in case I mess something up and bring the server down - it's serving it's DBs just fine, I just can't check logs or changing things using the Java GUI. Any ideas why the Deployment Assistant is behaving like its a new server, when it's working quite happily. How can I launch Server Admin without the DA starting? Oh, I've run the latest Java updates and …

Hey there. We have a Mac OSX server hosting Filemaker 8 with several databases. We'd like to move Filemaker 8 onto our PC server. After I install Filemaker 8 on the PC server, what should I do? I know where the Filemaker databases are stored on the Mac server, so I imagine I just copy them to the PC server. However, I'm not sure how to point our Filemaker clients to the database directory automatically. Normally when a user opens Filemaker, we choose Open > Remote and it pulls up a list of the databases. Any thoughts?

Anti virus is off, firewall is down... happens locally as well as remotely with every kind of OS. Doesnt seem to matter whether if it's the latest Java or older builds. Yes, the cache is cleared.

I have server-based database that can be checked out and back in (for use off-network). All records in the database have a URN (auto-entered serial) field but, as it would be possible to have duplicate URN records created off-site and on-site, each record has a second field, which is URN & UID (unique logged-in user code). This second field is an auto entered calculation field with "do not replace" enabled and is also the check-in import match field. The import process is replacing the content of URN·UID, even though 'do not replace' is enabled. Is this just the way things work and I have to move away from auto-entered calculations? Or is there another…

I am in the process of upgrading my FMS 9.03 to FMS 11. Here's my problem: I upgraded our OS from Tiger Server to Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8. Ever since I did the upgrade, I've been unable to launch the FMS9 application. I'm running Java 6, which I am betting is my problem. I tried to download Java 5, but I get an error that it's no longer supported. I would like to A. Review the scripts I have running in 9.03 to make sure I transfer them over correctly, B. Stop the Database, then C. Upgrade to FMS11. Then in a few months upgrade to FMS12, but first things first. How should I proceed? Hi -- I have a client who is going to use their database via "Network Sharing" (they can't afford FMP Server). I have shared with them the relevant FIlemaker support pages such as: http://help.filemake...1I0aVBUaw%3D%3D . . . and I believe they understand that the Users need to access the Hosted file via "Open Remote" within Filemaker rather than opening it "directly" over a shared file network. So, they are going to have a computer dedicated to Hosting the file, so the Users will always "Open Remote" to get there. They asked whether it is okay to leave the file on the Server "open" perpetually -- that is, not close up the file after work every day and r…

We have a solution that we are storing documents in a shared folder on the Mac server and use a calculated path to show the documents in FileMaker. The file permissions for the folder are set to Read and Write for everyone and is set to make all subfolders and files inherit the permissions. When a user adds a document to the database we copy the document to the shared folder, but the permissions do not get set correctly on that file. When a user wants to view a document we export the file from the record to their Temp directory. When computers other that the one that imported the document try to view it they get an error that the file cannot be created on this disk. …

Hey there, We have a Mac OSX server with Filemaker 7.0, and a Windows 2003 server with Filemaker 5.5. I'd really like to get rid of our Mac server and put them both on the same server. However, I have a feeling issues may arise by having two different versions of Filemaker on the same server. Will this be an issue? I know this is a strange setup with old versions of Filemaker, but both of our databases are dependent on their versions, particularly the database hosted on 5.5. We are considering a second, dedicated Windows server to host Filemaker 5.5, but it'd certainly save a little bit of money by putting them on the same machine... Any advice / sugge…

To date I have always done updates on the live hosted file, but I now have reasons to work on a local copy, then do updating later. I suppose the basic procedure should be to: 1) close the hosted file 2) download it to my local disk 3) import the data into my new file 4) upload the new file But how is it recommended that I download the hosted file from FileMaker server? Should I use AFP to make the databases folder shared? That somehow seems dangerous and wrong to me... I need to do this from off site.

Hello all, I have a solution that requires 7 users to access an FM11 Database over a WAN. The problem I have is that the WAN connection is not consistently good enough quality to access the database via FMNET. It basically works, but I see far too much of the coffee cup. The FM clients need to access the computer’s serial ports and has very precise printing requirements, so I don’t think that IWP would be an option. To limits the network traffic to only screen updates, I was thinking of setting up a second server at our head office with 7 virtual machines and then access the 7 virtual machines via remote access. I don’t have any experience with Virtual Machines and wa…

Increasingly, professional FileMaker developers as well as IT administrators with responsibility for FileMaker Server are encountering some interesting issues with file sizes and backup schedules. Prudent organizations who run frequent backups–with or without file verification—and who also have large file sets running into the hundreds of megabytes, or even larger, are experiencing delays and the infamous “coffee cup” on their networks when FileMaker Server executes a backup schedule. Some developers and administrators have tried staggering the backups by selecting only some files for one backup and then selecting other files for the next one. While this redu…

I have an application with a FMS10 server under Tiger, multiple FM9/10 clients, & a remote MySQL/PHP/Ajax/Apache webserver. We need Filemaker 9 to make reports based on data from both FMS and MySQL tables. The FM programmer we use proposes to put an ODBC driver on one of the client machines, have it interrogate the MySQL server, and then build the reports only on that machine. I am wondering if it is possible to have FMS-10 instead do the connection to the MySQL, so that any client could read the data & create reports. But I'm clueless as to what server ODBC support really means. Thanks...

Hello – I have a question about FileMaker Custom Web Publishing performance. My company has a fairly large application written in FileMaker. We have decided to port some of these features to the web. This app will be installed on our customer’s web servers. I’ve only been using FileMaker for about 10 months but I’ve been using programming languages like PHP and ASP.NET for about 10 years. One of the things that come to mind right away is what version of FileMaker Server to use. I see Advanced allows ODBC which I like since I’m really confident in SQL. The other thing is performance. With FileMaker Server, instead of using ODBC, I see that the FileMake…

I'm having an issue when running a script on the server. I have a variable set called $filterDate. I run a Perform Find [Restore] finding in a field on one layout with the criteria $filterDate. This find works. However, later in the same script, I use the same Perform Find [Restore] on another date field on a different layout and it returns a 500 error (I set a send mail step just after this to trap the error and notify as you cannot debug on the server side). The strange this is if I run this script on the client side, it works perfectly. I then disabled the Perform Find and replaced it with three steps. Enter Find Mode, Set field x to $filterDate, and Perform Find …

I am experiencing challenges with the server module of FM Server 11 ( up to date at v.11.0.3.309) on Windows SBS 2003 R2. On some restarts the will report back an error in the adminserver.exe file 5 times. If this happens neither the Control Console nor the Command Line Interface can access the server module. It often reports error 10502. The adminserver preforms as expected via the CLI. This error was caused over the weekend when we updated the Window SBS 2003 server with the Java 6 update 31. However I have had the same issue without performing an update at other times. What is causing the server module not to start or respond and how can it be repaired? …

I have a solution that is based at company A and company B also needs to gain access to the database. Along with a few other remote users form different locations. Apart from having a dedicated broadband line between the two companies. What is the fastest way to share data? I was thinking a terminal server? However, I am not sure how quick that will be and will it be any quicker than just using regular broadband and using the remote connection on the regular server??

I need clarification on how FMS schedules process. Our system has several server scripts that run at night. They are called from separate schedules and we assumed that they each run the File Open script. 1. If Schedule 1 takes 3 hrs and Schedule 2 starts at 2am, does it run concurrently or wait until Schedule1 is complete? 2. If it runs concurrently, does Schedule 2 run the File's Open Script or does it say, "hmm...I already have a session, I'll skip the Open Script?" I ask because we are seeing unexpected settings to our global fields. These fields are set in the Open Script. We're starting to think concurrent server scripts are "overwriting" the global va…

Hi all, I'm a bit stumped on a problem. I have a file with 2 server-side sync scripts; 1 work and 1 does not. I am using script steps as shown in the attached image. The scripting works fine when run from the client connecting to a server as well as client with a local file, but it will not create the export file when running as a scheduled script (error 100, file does not exist). The odd thing is I have an identical script for STUDENTS and it runs perfectly fine as a scheduled script. I thought I might have a corrupted file so I ran recovery on both, and no errors were reported. I also created a new separate file with TEACHERS and STUDENTS TOs, export scrip…

Here's something I'm curious about: Let's assume for a moment that FileMaker will update their database file format down the road (they haven't done that since version 7 in 2004, so it's bound to happen at some point). Let's assume further, that you, as a company, have clients which are connecting to a FileMaker server you're hosting. Now SOME of your clients start using a the new file format, while others stay with the old one. That poses a challenge. Since the current version of FileMaker Server can only serve the current file format, you need to keep that one. However, to serve those clients which switched to the new file format, you need the new FileMaker Server …

Hey all, I've been running a FMS locally for about 5 years with no issues. We have an XServe and a large database with about 20 users and a ton of data. Our salespeople access it remotely from home on their laptops and via FileMaker Go. We recently merged with another company and are in the process of moving them to our FileMaker solution. For a short term solution, I installed a Mac Mini Server running 10.7 in their office (they're in SC and we're in FL) connected to a 1.5Mbit T1 line (not fast but about the best they're going to get in that area...and the same that we have here). To convert them, I made a clone of our database and imported their data into …

I'm currently running FMSA11 and have a few server side scripts on a schedule. I attempted to setup a new schedule today and am having an issue with the Start / End times. The parameters i would like to setup are: Server side script to run daily every 15 minutes Start Time: 9:00AM End Time: 10:00PM When i attempt this time range, FileMaker states that the End Time needs to be after the Start time which it clearly is. For the mean time i compromised and set the End Time to 8:00PM and File Maker accepted that. When i save the changes and view the details for the schedule at the bottom of the Schedule window, it says: Repeat: Run everyday, every 15 mi…

Hi All - I know that the general rule of thumb is to NOT run the FileMaker Pro client on the same server as Filemaker Server. We sort of break this rule by installing FileMaker Pro Advanced on our client's servers and use it only for support. No regular/normal use on the server. As of FileMaker Server 11, we skipped over Server 10, I am noticing a pretty annoying problem that is becoming a great inconvenience to our clients. I thought it was isolated to our Mac installs, but has now shown it's face on several of our Windows Server installs. The problem is that if we try to open our app in FMPA, on the server that is hosting the files, via our st…

I have 12 or so databases that I want to host with FM Server 11 on a Win7 machine. I've imported the databases through admin consol, and have also set security and sharing to read/write for all to the folder manually. But they still don't show up in the FM Pro 11 client on the MAC. I only see the correct server name. The server.perm filesize on the MAC is 8kb, so it is present and not "blank" Any good suggestions?

I am looking for some advice for having users remotely connect to our database for data entry only. Originally, we used IWP, but it was frustrating because we have a number of fields that use value lists with related values (the second field would be dependent on what has been selected from the previous field) and with the IWP we had to commit the record by pressing save in order for it to "refresh" and populate the next field's value list. This made data entry take too long. Currently, we have FM 11 Server on one server, and we have all of the user licenses living on a Mac Mini. Users access the Mac Mini through Share Screen/Remote Desktop and use the Open Remote fe…

I have been having a problem today trying to set up a script that runs on the server overnight which will gather currencies and security prices that need to be updated with the market closing values of the previous day. This script involved setting a filter field with the value Get ( currentdate ) - 1. The script runs with no errors but the filter field is not being set. It remains empty. When running this in a client, it works flawlessly. I found an article today which discusses differences in scripts being run on the client vs. the host. The article was not very clear but it seemed to imply that many of the Get ( ) functions return an empty value when running on th…

So, I've been doing some metrics of Filemaker's abilities, and I have some questions. Here's what I did: I created a database with over 800,000 records. The database itself has only 2 fields: Price and Price_Summary. Price is a number field with that was populated with a random number between 1 and 100 to 2 decimal places. The field is not indexed. Price_Summary is a Summary(Total) of Price. Record Count: 837,000 File Size: <14 MB File was not accessed by more than 1 person (me) at a time. Next, I allowed Price_Summary to calculate while the database was opened from my local machine, and again when I opened it from the hosted file on FM …

Hi: I have my files hosted on Server 11 installed on a Mac Mini server running Snow Leopard, accessed by machines running FMPA 9, FMP 9, 10 and 11 and FM Go, both remotely (WAN) and locally (LAN). Router is a Netgear. No problems until recently and seem to be VERY hardware incompatibility related. a) Cable company changed my home modem to a Arris Touchstone Telephony modem/router, form that day on, I cannot see the files hosted on the server from home. On my iPhone and iPad both with FM GO, I switch WiFi off and connect via 3 G, and all the files are visible again. With my Toshiba R-705 Laptop (FMPA 9) it is the same story, blocked access through the Arris, b…

I currently have the following Setup: 1) MS SQL 7 Backend running on Windows Server 2000 2) FilemakerPro Server 9 (FMPS9) running on Windows Server 2003 SP2 3) FileMakerPro 9 (FMP9) running on Windows XP The database is hosted by FMPS9 that makes an ODBC connection to MS SQL 7 backend to retrieve records. My older server running FMS9 recently passed away, and I put in a new server running 10.7. Needless to say, FMS9 will not run on it, although I tried to get it working. I experimented with running FMP11 on that machine and accessing the DBs from other machines on the office network, but it's just too clumsy, so I sprang for FMSA11. Now, unfortunately, FMSA11 will not install, insisting that I delete FMS9 first. Because FMS9 never got working, the installer file will not offer me the Uninstall option. After checking other posts in this forum, I tried deleting the entire library/Filemaker Server folder and dumped the Java cache, but FMSA11 will still not install. …

Hi guys We're running an aging PowerMac G5 server for our material/production system that I'm looking to replace. It recently failed due to bad memory, causing database corruption. Thankfully we had a 4 hour old backup to rollback to. We're up and running now but the boss told me to get something new and something that isn't a ticking bomb. At the moment we're stuck with 5.5 server, I know it's old and we're looking into what we can do about it, but that's still quite some time away and I'd like to replace the hardware a.s.a.p. What I've found out is that going Windows is our best bet, but the question is, which version? I've read that newer Windows version…

Hello, My apologies if this isn't in right the area. We have a database on FMSA 11 (WIN). We also have a Win2K8 server that is holding scanned PDF documents that we now like to integrate into the database. Is is possible for FileMaker to somehow connect and display the contents of a shared directory? We don't have the resources right now for something like SuperContainer... Ideally, we would like to "relate" the two systems. Example: In the database we have a field which holds the value 154-1234. On the shared drive we have many folders, but would like to view the contents of only X:\Scanned\154-1234\. I've looked at OLE linking, but I either don't g…

FM Server version 11.0.3.309 running on Windows Server 2008 R2, with 30+ FM Pro licensed Windows clients & IWP. I have several scripts with a Send Email step that is configured as "Send via SMTP Server" (there is no Outlook or any other email client on the server). These scripts work fine for all FM Pro clients (in fact, IWP users as well), except for one user. In any script that calls for a Send Email via SMTP Server, he is given an error message: "The connection was refused by the SMTP server." The error would seem to be related to his client machine/install, because when another user logs in with his credentials, they are able to send an email. How could …

Hi, everyone, Today, I was looking over our FileMaker logs and I noticed the wpc_access_log. I was about to open it when I realized that it is over 1GB! My initial thought was to create a new text file with the same name, then rename the old one so I could go over it on my own time, but when I did this, permissions became an issue and I had to revert it. I was wondering what I can do with this file. I the log size limit enabled on the server and set to 40 MB, but perhaps that doesn't affect wpc_access_log? I would prefer to open it on my own machine and leave a blank text file there for the log to continue recording into. If I copy the file, then delete …
