    Hi there, I've built an invoicing database off of the supplied filemaker pro template and I'm trying to sort my portals through a category field that I define. By using the portal setup I sorted the portal records by that category variable...it seems to work fine and sorts them accordingly. However, when I then try and print out all of the portals into an actual invoice, it no longers takes this sorting into account and lists them as they were entered. Any hints how to keep them sorted?   9. I have a FMP file that loads various other FMP databases into a single file. In my header, I have a logo and a portal-based menu that links to layouts that load data from those individual files. For all other layouts (photographs, boxes, exhibitions..etc) everything works fine, but with Contacts, the header contents will not appear. Similarly, the Photographs layout loads an image and title information from the Images database file. Again, the header contents will not load until I have entered the ID# from the Images database.     I want to have a portal displaying records in the found set. For example: I have an Inventory table that has a self-relationship. I have a layout to show the full details of each record, and a layout that shows a list of inventory (through a portal). I have a side search area that filters this portal. However, I want to be able to allow users to be able to search all fields if they wish to - not just limited to those I have in the search area.   13. I have a check box that displays two values from a value list. I want to make it impossible for the user to select both check boxes, and required to select one. I don't know if this will cause a problem later, but in another table, I will be reusing the same value list as the source for a check box and will need the option to select both in that record.   14. Digging into conditional formatting. Can buttons/fields be "flickered" the same way they can be assigned an alternative color, if certain conditions are or are not met? I don't think FM Pro Adv 12 has this built in. I'm thinking this may be some sort of loop, customized to "pulse" or "flicker" (animate?) the background color (lighter-darker-lighter...) until it's pressed. Am I off base with "loop"?     I found several others have stated this conplaint as far back as FM7 so I guess I'm with company. Kind of surprised that it is still not fixed. Anyway, I couldn't input certain Thai and Lao characters in FileMaker text fields or labels. But it can read those characters all right when those text are input directly via MySQL and displayed in FM (I use FM12 Pro). Even more curious is that I can type those characters in FM Go! Have seen a lot of suggestion about copy/paste, opening up scripts and all, but I would really prefer a built-in solution.     I'm pretty sure the answer is "No", but just in case I've somehow overlooked the obvious in my various searches, I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change FileMaker's Default Table View Properties.  Specifically, I pretty much ALWAYS want to "Include Header Part" and "Include Footer Part" when in Table view, but I have to go in and check the appropriate checkboxes every bloody time I create a new layout.     I'm pulling my hair out over this one. I know I've seen the answer to this one somewhere, but no amount of googling seems to be helping me find it again. I've created a value list that uses values from a "Drivers" table. The first field value is the DriverID, and the second is Full_Name. When I select to sort values using the Second Field, the value list shows only the first record from the Drivers table.

Â How do I have a summary field in a trailing grand summary, but summing a field from a parent table? Â See the attached screen shot which should explain pretty quickly what I'm trying to do. However, I have an "overview" or "dashboard" layout of portals which is going horribly slow even with a simple (one field, stored) relationship.     I needed a way to manually reorder portal records from time to time and to keep a sequential number with each record for export purposes. This example I created does this via a looping script which allows individual records to be moved up and down the sort order and also delete records from anyplace in the sequence and have the remaining records automatically resequenced. I am not sure if it might get slow when dealing with large numbers of records but in my case there are unlikely to ever be more than a dozen or so. Each project is associated with a client organization and another unrelated contact from the Contacts table - the salesperson. I have created a custom menu set that swaps the shortcuts for "paste" and "paste without formatting" (command+v now becomes "Paste Without Formatting" and command+shift+alt+v now becomes "Paste"). This works fine except for when a dialog box is presented to the user. For some reason, the "Paste Without Formatting" function is disabled and the only option available to the user is the normal paste command, so in essence the paste shortcut (command+v) is now disabled. A quick search of Google returns no results, but is this an issue with Filemaker or is there a known limitation of shortcuts and dialog boxes?

    Hi folks, I'm stuck again!! I have a portal I'm using to input grades for class asessments. At the moment, to go from one row to the next I have to click on it with the curser. When I tab, I go to the start of the next row and have to then tab across to get to the same field on that row. I'd really like to be able to tab (or use the keyboard arrows) to navigate the same field on different rows of the portal, ideally using arrows to go to different fields on the same row; just like you would on a spreadsheet.     I have an inventory table. It is the items of inventory only. There is no transactions of inventory bought (in) or use (out). As inventory prices change on purchase invoices the information is manually updated. I have decided I would like to track the history of prices. I have a child-table to hold the price and the invoice date. I need to populate the original purchase price field with the most recent entry in the portal. Other fields on the layout reference the purchase price field. I have related the parent-table to the child-table by a serial number on the parent-table. How do I populate the inventory record from entry on the portal?

  51. The "no fill color" option when applying conditional formatting to text does not work. Instead of making the text transparent it makes the text white. In the past I have worked around this problem by simply making the text the same color as the background. Unfortunately in my current solution the background is a photographic image so the workaround does not work. Does anyone have a trick for dealing with this issue?

At any rate, I am trying to use a portal to display line item records that include a unique reference number, a short description (40 characters or so) and a much longer explanation that reads more like a note field. Each explanation typically has anywhere from 150 to 400 characters in the populated field.     Hello I have a subsummary report with a main group and subcategories. Some main groups only have one subcategory which is the same as the main group. Other main groups have up to 4 subcategories. Now, knowing what I want to do and being able to do it are two completely different things! So, I have a small (c.1,000 entries) database for my video game collection. It's flat file and contains all my hardware and software.     This must be so elementary I can't find anything about it in the forums. Forgive me, be as tolerant as you can ... I've got FMPro 12; on an iMac. I've made a database of about 2000 people ("A"). And I've got a file ("B") of portraits of about 250 of them. I have a button in A: it uses the ID of a person to find an entry in the portraits file B. All that works fine. Two problems: 1. It would be good to grey out the button if the person hasn't got a portrait ---saves time, and is considerate to the user. How do I do that? 2. I want a value list on the customers layout that shows only the products associated with that customer's SIC Code. There is a field in the customers table that lists their SIC code. For purposes of this solution, there is only one SIC code per customer.     I am using FM 12 Adv Since my membership application was started, I have stored the version number as a global, calculation (so that my import will not over write it). As I release a new version, I just change the value of the "Version" field.  Today I updated from version 1.48 to 1.49 and to my surprise even though the Global::Version field shows 1.49, on my layout it says 1.48. How can that be?  Shouldn't my layout say 1.49???  Â

  66. I have 2 tables Members->>DES DES is a portal on Members. I have a report based on Members in which I need to pick off the top row of values in DES. (It is sorted Descending by Date) In my report, when I specify DES::Date, I do not get the top row of the portal. I think I can set up a 'scratch' field that will hold nothing but the current date and write to it when I input the date, but the question is "Is there a simple way to make FM recognize the top row of a portal and when the report sees DES::DATE it pulls up the TOP portal row DES::Date?

I'm trying to find a way to use the "Self" function in conjunction with conditionally formatting on tab panels to create an aesthetically pleasing yet simple way to show users which tab panel they have selected. I originally tried adding conditional formatting to one of the tabs using the calculation: GetLayoutObjectAttribute ( Self ; "isFrontTabPanel" ) Unfortunately, this does not work. I have 2 tables: Members and DES  Members-->>DES  DES is a portal on Members  I wrote a script that deletes a potal row in DES but when I run debug it clearly shows that despite using 'go to portal row (first) when I look at the values in what I think is the first portal row, I am actually getting the values in another portal row.  How can this be?  BEFORE The Delte Script   AFTER / During the Delte Script: Â

    I have a layout, LayoutOne. I made a duplicate of it LayoutOneCopy. I made changes to LayoutOneCopy, and now I want LayoutOneCopy to be my new default layout. The problem is, all my links, scripts, etc. say Go To LayoutOne. If I rename LayoutOne to LayoutOne-Old, all the scripts make the change. Is there a quicker way to have all the scripts reflect the new layout name rather than going through each individual script and link? Thanks!

    I have a pop-up menu that displays standard ad sizes for specific publications. "Allow Entry of Other Values" is activated so that users can put in a special size when appropriate. If someone puts in an "Other" value all is fine. However it seems that this disables the value list for that record. i.e. if someone enters an "Other"value and then changes their mind and wants to use one of the standard ad sizes from the value list, it can't be done except by typing the name in the "Other" dialogue box.   73. Hi, I have a wholesaler contact database in which I use a portal that points to my document database. Among the document database, I have a field named "expiration Date" the premise is that one of these documents, and there can be many, in the portal is a license, and that license expires. The expiration date field which is within the portal is only populated if it is a license document type (using a "document Type" field). I would define two fields in the table in which the field values lived....one for entering a number(Position) and one calculation field(SortBy) that stores a quantity of space characters equal to the number entered in the Position field. I have quite a good understanding how conditional pop-up menu menus work after watching several tutorials online. However I'm unable to figure out the task at hand. I'm looking to the following. In the tenants layout I choose an apartment number (via a pop-up menu through the relationship with the apartments table) that the tenant wishes to rent. I have created several layouts - apparently successfully and they display and work OK - but suddenly, when I proceed to edit the layouts, the theme background and margins are stuck at a position much narrower than the displayed width and and I can no longer drag it to change it. I can drag the length up/down OK but the width is stuck (see attached screenshot) Â This used to work fine but has recently got stuck.   81. I have a layout with a set of tabs that are not visible to the user. I would like to apply condition formatting to a button when a specific tab is selected. So for example, I have a "notes" tab and a "calendar" tab. When the user clicks the "notes" button it take them to the "notes" tab. I would like the color of the button to change so it's clear to the user what they have selected. On a side note, I am sending the user to the tab as by assigning an object name to the tab and then using the "go to object" script step. Is there a newer/better way to do this in FM12?

What I'd like to happen is that the address in the current record (on the left) be highlighted in its related record in the portal (on the right). I'm an old-time FM developer, almost full time since v2.1, and understand fully how portals work in every version of the program from 3-11. It seems like there are bugs in the portals in v12. I'd like to see the field name label UNDER the field and visible only in Find Mode; in Browse Mode, the field data in this particular solution is self-evident.
