Upgrading & Migration

Hi Folks, Hope everyone's well... We have to upgrade our old servers so Im trying to install FM server 17 on a new Windows 22 server .. and it wont install .. Just keeps throwing up this message even though we've copied the license info to the install folder.. I know the spec says Fm server 17 isnt supported on Windows 22 server but all the old filemakers in the past said the same but worked perfectly anyway .. I'm still running FMP11 (.fp7) because it has continued to work for over a decade... but finally it's hitting the wall of Mac OS updates (upgraded to Mojave and noticed a bunch of glitchy stuff, was going to upgrade to Catalina, but know FMP11 won't work at all). I don't use any web based part of FMP, it lives solely on my computer with simple layouts and manageable amount of records (no more than 2000) but I have dozens of databases that I use across different jobs that I really can't afford to lose access to. I have a FM solution for my small business (2 people), which I have been running on FM Server 12 (on a Mac Mini) with each of us using FM12 client, on OSX Sierra 10.12. It's a pretty basic database solution for order entry, customers, and vendors, which we have been using for 7 years. I'm preparing to update our OSX as I feel we're going to need to do this sometime in the future in order to stay compatible with other programs we use. I've been using FMPA16 at work, mostly because I'm lazy but also because they were maintaining an outdated FMServer version that didn't cooperate with later versions of the desktop client. This morning the server admin ported my databases over to the new server environment, so I'm jumping straight to FMP19. (Background) 10 Filemaker Pro 6 (.fp5) files converted to one single Filemaker Pro 14 (.fmp12) file with 10 Tables and accessed via a Hosting Service with Webdirect. The Database requires that you need to be able to copy Data from a number of fields in one Table to equivalent Fields in another Table for some Records when required. I'm retired and ran FileMaker 12 on Sierra with no issues, however when I upgraded my SSD it will only run on High Sierra. FMPro 12 is unstable and crashes on many change functions. I don't have the funds to get the latest version but what is the earliest stable version for High Sierra? From this link it seems to be FMPro 15. Hello All, I have a FM DB Solution that works quite well for Auction and have a few dozen of happy customers It stores Images using the External Ref Only features. All is Great even on FMS Server. Question re: rolling up a 49 file solution into 1 or 2 files. 2 files would be for a separation model. Are there currently any tools to aide in this conversion? I'm thinking NO! My plan was to copy in all the tables, then create layouts, copy value lists, etc.. Now add relationships. After this bring in the scripts, fixing the broken ones. Then, either fix broken calcs, lookups, etc, OR re-import the fields. Next, copy/paste layouts...... and on and on..... ANY IDEAS?

Hi guys, I have a large database set up in TapForms and some of the entries have images attached to them, but the software is already acting kinda slow. In the near future I will be undertaking a project which will significantly increase the amount of images associated with each database entry. I am concerned that TapForms would not be a viable option for such an image heavy database. Hello, I have a solution ( For French Auction ) using FMS ( Local ) and FM Client ( 16 and 17 ) Some auctions are located in areas where not internet is available. Right now, my client are exporting an instance of the Auction ( With all the related Datas, ) go to the place where the Auction takes places with Laptops, use one laptop as the Main Computer and the second one as a Client. Interesting Thread. I find myself with older databases pre V11 that people are using that are crusty and need recovery. Some won't recover well but the data can come off of them, especially if I go up the version food chain ( opening the 11 file by importing into V16). The one sticking point is reviving the Layouts for clients who want it to look just like it did and use many layouts for printing all manner of different printable forms. Re-making those forms from scratch or taking the art but redoing the fields is time prohibitive so finding a away of importing the Layouts from an older file and keeping the fields and functionality and its appearance would be a great feat…

Hi, I have a FileMaker Server 17 with 10 database files hosted on a premise. We have 150 users and 90 FM Client licenses. We use Citrix XenApp for distributed platform as a middle-ware. 30-40 users are simultaneous users. Now, we are planning to remove Citrix Xen app as a middle-ware. due to slow performance. Also, we are planning to install FM Server 17 on AWS EC2 environment. Apart from Appstream 2.0, What are other ways to use these database from AWS environment with high performance as per our end requirement. I've been running FMP13 and FMPAdv13 on Win7 and MacOS10.x platforms, and finally have to upgrade my hardware. I bought a few copies of FMPAdv17 to see how it works, and as far as I can see it will open and run the old FMP13 files, using the same filenames and extensions (fmp12). After a file is created or modified by FMP17, it can still be opened and run normally by FMP13. It would be great if I could access the files using both FMP13 and FMP17 clients. I don't use Server, just have a machine on my network running a standard FMP13 client. Unfortunately, it looks like FMP13 cannot open any file hosted by FMP17, and visa-versa. He had some valuable databases created in Filmaker v1 saved on an equally old Apple HD of the type 20SC. Now he's mac has gone to the Mac heaven. But he have some old PC's, one with Windows 98 on it. Recently upgraded from 12 to 16 but noticed file is still saving as 12. Also noticed problem with displaying and counting records. I built a fairly complex database a few months ago, and sent it to my counterparts at overseas locations to use until I can implement one last (time-consuming) section. I am working on applying fixes to existing formulas/layouts, and adding new scripts/layouts/tables to a "Master" DB file. I am converting a few simple FMP5 databases to Fm16. I have already converted these databases and know how to do it...but I have run into some other snags that I need some help with. I had downloaded a trial of FMP11 on to my Mac (latest OS) to convert the files to FM7. Then I converted the FM7 files to FMP16 on my PC w/ Win10. Worked great ! My thoughts are to first do a conversion and then rewrite or refactor different parts of the application. I am beside myself. I got FMPro Advanced 14 and used it to redo a database. I worked extensively on the database fields, the value lists, and created lots and lots of calculations to create merged dialogues on the pages. After I did all of that, all by editing the pages that already existed, I created new layouts and used the button bar at the top and the tab-like sections below within each tab. I worked to transfer every bit of work I had done to the new layout and then deleted the old layouts. Hi, I have been given the task of upgrading and improving our solution at work which consists of 9 files. I've started by identifying the problems such as data loss or unexpected things happening and have focussed on one file to start with. In an offline file I have made my changes and the file is much more robust and easier to use but the problem is I've made changes on the relationship graph so the data is broken. At my small legal practice, both my paralegal and I access an FM database (v13, but .fm12) hosted by a hosting company (ODI). Currently each of us access the database with an FMP 13 client. I will be migrating to FM 14 (kicking myself for not buying the buy one get one free back in Dec). I typically do testing on my Mac, before upgrading hers. Therefore, is there any issue with me accessing the database with FMP (or FMA) 14, and her with FMP 13? I'm thinking not, since the database is still the same. I'm not upgrading the database to use any FM14-only (UI) functionality until we're both upgraded.

Hi, I thought you could drag my older 12, 13 solutions over the FM 14 icon and convert the solution to have the FM14 extension. However, it only opens the older FM solutions. I am concerned that as FM advances is versions, Older FM Solutions may not open as the older versions get further away so I was hoping I could just drag and drop the older solution onto the new FM version and update solution extension so I can keep my oder solutions updated and I won't have to redevelop the older solutions. Hi Forum! I'm going to upgrade from FM Pro Adv.12 to FM Pro Adv14. I've done plenty of research (probably not enough) and was wondering what would be the best/most practically way to approach. 1. Should I do a complete rebuild? I've had a few crashes seemingly unrelated to my file. I have a client that was just converted from a FM 5 solution to FM13. Their solution had some 60+ files in it. With the new (from 5 anyway) security accounts in place, they are finding they have to log in many multiple times at different places. Frustrating. Is there a list of best practices for combining those many separate files into one or two? Or better ways to clean up the login issues? Thanks, Justin

Hi guys i am fairly new to fm. I use fm 13 as a client to access fm server. We have 18000 customers / unique ids in the DB as a crm each entity has has a series of tiers associated for opt in programs. I need to find a specific 700 of them by surname and make one change in the field from "inactive" to "active" I have their names and details in a csv Obviously I could search individually ale the change in the form, save and repeat. But could I somehow drop all the names in and get the 700 and make the changes from the table field. Is there a better way to achieve this many thanks

So i've got an active fmp7 database running on a 9.03 server... The hardware is already years passed its expiration point, and (due to that annoying java issue) I don't think I can install it on a newer OS model.. Am currently running on Mac OSX 10.5, and can't seem to get the Admin software to work on 10.6 in any usable way.. So my plan: utilize a new(er) server with FMS 14, install it, and use it to serve the older FMP file.. I've been told that a newer server will handle older files (as long as I don't change them import them into a newer FMP app and re-save them). Is this path good, bad, or just plain impossible?

I can't seem to find a link to upgrade from FMPA 13 to 14. Is there no longer a way to upgrade or am I missing something?

If you want a painfully slow experience hosting a solution; migrate your FM 12 solution to FM 13. I have customers using FM 12 moving to FM 13 including myself, we are not redeveloping their solutions and I was wondering if there is any insight here. Hey all I've moved my database onto a different computer, and the database contains secure, externally maintained containers. The transfer of the containers completely failed, and now my containers contain a "missing file" reference. The secure data is on the new computer, but FileMaker is failing to see it when I've updated the connection folders. Is there a way to fix this, or must I re-import the container data for each individual record? Hi - I have a runtime solution that I will be upgrading. The new version will have several many to many relationships where previously there were many to one. So I'll need to populate the new Join tables with data to correspond to the previously existing instances in the earlier version. I'm thinking this must be a fairly common thing to do as one realizes the need for more complex relationships and additional entities. Auto serial numbers - I'll need to add 1000 or something to theirs so we don't clash when we merge data. To update the solution I'm planning to create a clone, copy it to their computer and copy their records to it. - this seems to be the most beginner level way to do it! In order to (cheaply) have my FM solution hosted, I need to combine 12 files into one. I am using v12. Some of the files are quite large (over 100Mb) and most have lots of relationships, value lists, scripts but no custom functions. Very complex. It seems that there is no automatic way to do it but is there a step-by-step for v12 since links will be broken if I do it incorrectly. Help please! Happy to upgrade if that will help in any way.

Just got off hour long call with FM support, recommended I post in forum. Forced (Mavericks upgrade) to FMPro13 broke an old Filemaker-supplied inventory/invoicing program I have used for years. Structure, basically, 7 connected db files: People.fp7, Products.fp7, Invoices.fp7 etc. called with Menu.fp7. Had upgraded numerous times before, didn't break.... I have an old FM3 application for an agriculture program that has been migrated to FMP11 via FMP5. In the app there is a record layout in one file (Exhibitor) that includes a portal allowing modification of related child records from another table in another file (Animals). There is a button in the portal layout to take a user from the portal in the Exhibitor layout to an Animal layout in the Animals file, showing the record from the Exhibitor's portal. The script fired on the button click scrolls the records in the Animal file to the current record in the portal, then runs Select Window to switch focus to the other layout, with the fields populated with that record. …

According to Filemaker's Help pages, Filemaker 11 is not supported and not tested on Windows 8 http://help.filemake...11308/related/1 This may prove to be an issue for us as we are currently on FMP11 and are not ready to migrate to FMP12. Upgraded on Dec 3. Simple flag fields (yes/no) no longer visually show flag status, even though they function properly - these check boxes remain empty at all times. The color scheme for highlights, check boxes etc has changed. The field and text formatting has also changed. Text, auto entered through scripting, now has shortened field bottoms and narrowing of text fields. Some scripts default to the wrong tab on a layout. These are just a few of the issues presented with the upgrade. I don't know what other issues may be found as I use the file more fully. So my question is: re-write the whole database or spend the time fixing the current one.?

Hi I have a FMP 12 database. I have an older MacPro G4 running OSX 10.5 and it looks like FMP 10 run fine there. So instead of just collecting dust i think it could be useful for this database. But the problem is, can i downgrade from FMP12 to FMP 10. Is it even possible? The FMP 12 file has many scripts and calculations and also relations so i really dont want to start over from the beginning. Any suggestions? Thronborg

We have many legacy tables that were setup before FM took all tables into a single file, and wondering if it makes sense to combine them. Business is finally beginning to look better (after many years), so we want to sharpen our office procedures. Examining our FM solutions is part of the procedure. I don't recall which version that the all-in-one capability was added, and I remember seeing at the time discussions of the pros and cons. Aside from the aesthetic issue, and convenience of having a combined datafile, is there an advantage to combining tables? Hey Guys, After I upgraded a few of my databases from 11 to 12 (and accessing remotely), I seem to get sorting records dialog boxes when navigating through layouts in layout mode. Show sample data is not enabled, so just wondered why this is happening, and if I can avoid it at all? Since upgrading from 11 to 12 editing/saving layouts/viewing layout lists seems lag. I also get an occasional connection lost, without the server or internet going down. Any help on the above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan

I have a solution that allows the end user to upgrade their own database. Basically I send them the new file, they run it, and it pulls in the old data. With FM12, I suspect that this workflow may no longer work. Is it still possible, with FM12, to import data stored in an FP7 file (i.e. via script)?

I'm somewhat new to FM but decades old to programming (Fortran, anyone?). First question: I have a Windows FMP database in FM 8.5 (file type "fp7") that needs to move to Bento on a Mac. Is there a path directly from fp7 to Mac Bento or do I need to first upgrade to FM 11 or FM 12? Second (related) question): My customer is already involved somewhat in Bento on the Mac. Hello, I recently migrated a FM11 database to FM12. I haven't noticed any hiccups the past few months until I tried to create a container field that has interactive content. I'm wanting to view PDFs in the container field. When I mark the container field to "optimize for interactive content" in layout mode, the Insert Menu does not display PDF or Audio/Video after selecting the container field in browse mode. However, if I create a new database in FM12, the interactive nature of a container field works as expected. Could this be a problem with the conversion? I'm not sure if this is the right place to make this post but I couldn't find anything that sounded any closer than here. Some time ago I remember reading a post, I think by Ender, showing the 1, 2, 3's of how to take part of one solution (tables, fields, relations, layouts, Value lists etc) and move it into a different solution. Hi All, My client has given a set of filemaker files which are "FP7" extension.I'm trying to open these files using "FileMaker Pro 12",after the file is converted to FMP12 also i get errors saying "either the host is not available or the file is not available on the host." I don't get it. I just converted to 12 from files created less than a year ago. How can this be possible (below)? UI before 992 kb UI after 3,372 kb Data before 1,932 kb Data after 2,952 kb It converted to classic layouts so it isn't because they installed the fancy ones. I have not yet worked at all in this and this is after the immediate conversion so it isn't because I messed with anything. The first refreshed view of the file timestamps produced this. When moving from FM 11 Pro Adv to FM 12 Pro Adv (just purhcased today in fact) is it necessary to uninstall FM 11 first? Or can I just overlay install the new ontop the old? Thanks. H

When trying to install the FMPA12 updater, I got the following error: "The updates cannot occur because you have selected a device which has not been file indexed. Enable indexing via the mdutil system utility." Thus, I am not able to upgrade. Anyone have any ideas?

This is a fairly easy problem that most languages/systems handle gracefully, but I'm relatively new to FM in general and can't figure out a more streamlined process than the extremely-time-intensive method we're using now. Running on Windows 7 with 6 to 10 clients accessing the database from a Windows Server 2008 r2. Clients are running FMP 12 v2 ( I had some issues when I tried the v3 update so have not implimented it ) Ever since we upgraded to FM 12 we have experienced some strange behavior. I am considering upgrading to FM12 on my main Mac. I have two other Imacs I use to access my primary db. One is running FM10 and the other FM11. If I upgrade will the other two imacs still be able to access and modify the file on my Imac with FM12 on it?

After converting a large 45 file solution I noticed that many of the External Data Sources were missing so I corrected them in each file using Manage External Data Sources. I then noticed that with my files open, many of them had truncated Window Tittles. My naming Standard is S.A. Attendance ect, now many have been truncated to just S.A The HUGE problem is that many of the Relationships are broken. When I open some files they bring up the password dialog to open related files that are already open. For those that are making new fmp12 solutions and are not converting the solutions, a small quick tip. Although you can not copy layout objects from pre 12 to 12 without it being rendered as an image, you CAN copy scripts and fields back and forth between the two applications WITHOUT conversion. IOW, you can borrow script, fields, tables, etc from an fp7 file and insert them into a new fmp12 solution without having to create a converted file. Well at least on Windows... Haven't tested on Mac but I would assume the same.

We upgraded to FM 12 recently but at the time I was hesitant to change the container fields from internal storage to the new external storage option. Now as I move forward and have done some testing with the externally stored images on a development copy I am confident that I would llike to make the change. Can this be done on a hosted file or should I close the file, move it to my desk top, make the conversion and reupload it?

We have a runtime solution provided to us by a third-party, which sits on our FMSA server along with our own FM databases. In preparing for a migration to FM12, I've noticed that it happily converts the runtime file to fmp12 format, renaming the file extension and all. My question is, does this conversion affect the integrity of the runtime file at all? Will simply reverting the extension back to the custom original be enough to host the file successfully on FMSA12? Or, should the files be converted at the source and a new runtime generated? Hi everyone, One of my clients is having a strange problem: Server Advanced 10.v2 3 Clients FM 11.0v4 After upgrading to Lion the clients have random issues seeing the file hosted on the server. Hello, I started my current "database" years ago. Way before FileMaker could have multiple files in one file. Anyway, all of a sudden I'm jealous of the current organization and I can't help but wonder - is there a way to combine multiple database files in one? A client of ours has a number of small databases, all of which have one table, a small number of scripts, and are pretty rudimentary. They want these databases combined into one file for hosting purposes. Down the road they will have a proper relational system built, but in the short term they are just wanting a single consolidated file. The process of combing all of these files into a single file is pretty easy, even if a bit repetitive and mildly time consuming. The largest issue is moving value lists. I am currently upgrading about 20 relational databases created with FM 6 (.fp5 file) to FM 11. The databases all have 20+ scripts in each plus relationships. The current version uses one or two databases, then uses all the others as lookups or tables. Is there a benefit of combing all these separate files into one single file with several tables? The database currently works, needing a few minor tweaks here and there. But, in the long run, would it be best to combine them? Thanks for your suggestions!

The files have been cleaned up, and the user is ready to move to Filemaker 8 (this is what they own, for their Tiger system). The question is how do I update existing installations without the need for importing existing records? Hearing that I could upgrade from FMP pro 9 to FMP Pro 11 Advanced I decided that is what I should do to help me manage our other FMP 9 users running off FMS9 while also giving us a chance to test the newer version with a view to a future upgrade. I have FM7 at work running on a Windows XP machine. It and the db I created on it are working fine. Today our IT guy mentioned to me that I should maybe think about upgrading (I assume to FM11) since we may at some point move to Windows 7. If we do this will my database be fine with the new version of Filemaker? Will it simply open up intact in the new version? What can I expect in the way of changes? Hi All My office is currently migrating to FM11 from FM6. We've converted the files and are busy fixing issues that have arisen due to the conversion - mostly adding commit records script steps! However we seem to come up against a rather strange problem with a number of files... When importing from text files we are finding that certain fields are not importing at all - its always the same fields. E.g. Hi folks. I have a client whose solution was written quite the while back. It has 6 files, or "databases". The new way of doing things is consolidation of all tables and layouts into a single "database". Is it a big job to import tables, layouts and scripts into a single "database" and update the scripting and functionality? Yes I know it depends on what's in the originals, but I want to get some idea what this could mean for work. Is it worth it? The only thing I see available is the "global" access of variables. I thought that some time ago I saw a method for us to be able to get filemkaer on lease, enabling us to pay an annual fee and get filemaker and any upgrades. Am I mistaken or is this being offered? It would ceertainly make sense as there would be no need for purchasing the upgerades, it also would make sense to people that are now used to cloud computing.
