Importing & Exporting

Hi, I'm about a week old with Filemaker and I'm stuck on importing data. I have a spreadsheet that I used to export from an Access database and it opens fine with the field heading at the top row and the data below. When I Start the import to my filemaker table, which I effective duplicated the fields from the access table, there are no fields showing in t he list from the spreadsheet. Tried the import anyway, but it did not import anything. I cant see why t his is t he case. any ideas?

I know that Filemaker could couple with web services, but accessing to this kind of information requires an Oaut 2.0 procedure from Google with Client Access key and secret. I am a new user of Filemaker (with some previous Java experience) trying to create a searchable project database for a contract furniture dealer. One of the features I feel would be very valuable is the ability to append any type of file (though most likely .pdf or .doc) to the project, and have the end user be able to open the file in Adobe Reader/Word/etc. simply by clicking on a button somewhere. This process is extremely inefficient (for those preparing the XLS) and suffers numerous data quality issues. Hello, I have a possible new client a sheriff's department... the wordpress site I am pitching is pretty simple.... except for one thing they want.... they want a searchable section for current inmates in their jail... I am creating an import feature for a web form that generates a csv file. I can't count on the user to always select the correct files to import, so I need to find a way to check for a matching record, and NOT import if a match exists. There is a unique ID# generated for each form submitted as a csv file. I also need to allow auto-enter functions so that a field is set to a particular value on the destination file. I would like to limit user input as much as possible, and script as much of this import as possible, but the schema and logic is escaping me at this time. Any suggestions?

My import routine is nearly complete, thanks for everybody on here who's helped with all my questions! I have one other question to ask. I need to ensure that the data being imported doesn't already exist in the system otherwise the values would double up and chaos would be caused. When I try to import a rather large XML file I get a rather unhelpful error message (see attachment). The file in question is about 860MB and contains about 100 000 records in an XML ONIX format. Working with books this is not unusual. The error message in question is very poor though so it's nearly impossible to find what is not working. ONIX records grows and this file stopped working after it reached a certain size. I do believe all records are fine and properly formated, but FileMaker doesn't seem capable of handling such a large file. To me it almost seems like it runs out of memory? I'll try to be as detailed as possible, but here's what i have: I have a paperwork database that is basically allowing me to fill in paperwork that is necessary for my company to start an account. I have an Excel XML file that we'd like to import directly into FileMaker. I understand that this requires an XSLT file, but I'm unclear on how I would get or create that file. The XML file isn't actually created by Excel, it's the output from the Wufoo.com online forms provider. As this is going to be a recurring task, we'd like to import the XML directly into FileMaker (rather than take extra steps of importing into Excel, saving, and importing again into FM). Hi, I have optical store and I made Filemaker database to manage inventory of optical frames and lenses. Now I want to implement fiscal printer into same database so I can print receipts directly. Fiscal printer read xml files but files needs to be in some particular format, Filemaker does not export it that way. Hi, I've used Textstyleadd in FM12 to change names entered in all caps into title case. However exporting them as csv seems to read the original ASCII. I have not been able to find a way to export csv with the corrected title case spelling. Is it possible? Thank you for any suggestions.

I've had this working for years and can't figure out what I'm missing. I have two files. I want to import records from one file to the second based on a calculated field - the same in each file (it's a cancatenation of three fields). The field lights up on the file to import to but not from the file to import from. So I can't match the fields. I changed each field to index all and it still doesn't help. What I'm trying to do is update the matching records with the updated fields from the other file and add the others. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an xslt that I modified awhile ago. It imports eye exam data from refraction equipment into our software. It worked fine for a long time. The XML data format was changed in a few elements so I modified the xslt to match the format change. Now when I try and import the data into filemaker the fields are not listed in the import window and, as a result, doesn't get imported. Hello there, I'm working on using XSL to change a Filemaker export using FMPXMLRESULT grammar to a different XML structure. Only a single field is needed from the Filemaker export file, however the closest i've gotten to successfully change the format is by setting <xsl:template match="/"> yet displays the error code of 0. I've tried to specify my match field to<xsl:template match="fmp:FMPXMLRESULT/fmp:RESULTSET" > however that causes my format to disappear and still display the error code. Hello, I have XML data from an online form service (below). How can I get the data into fields in FM? Each record in my FM contains fields for each xml_serializer_tag/value. Also, is there a way to use a ‘for-each’ loop to create the field names in the meta data section (rather than manually describing each)? There is MUCH more data in the actual XML. I've noticed something weird when importing data into my database file. Not so strangely enough, it increases in file size... What is strange, is that this has happened a few times, previously I reimported one field for all of the data (1mil records) which was previously already in there, it had just been manipulated in some and wanted to revert it back to an older one. This process increased the file size by 100 mb or so from before the import. I also noticed an increase of around 200mb after importing just 200 records, which do not contain any container data or anything. Is it normal for an import to increase the file size in this manner?

Is there a way to merge two Filemaker databases (they have identical fields)? The problem is we have 2 people populating the database on two separate computers. The plan was to load Person A's work into Person B's database and visa versa without losing data but I'm not seeing a merge function nor anything on this topic on any forum or help center. Hi -- I'm working with a solution that has been up and running for a few years. Recently I've added various layouts for access in Filemaker Go on an iPad. I'm working with FMP 13, just the desktop version, not on Server. The easiest approach seemed to be to make the new additions on a copy of the database since it was a lengthy process and the database needed to be in use the whole time. So, now the new version is complete, and I just need to import the data from the active database file into the new solution. I'm fairly new to Filemaker (using FM 13) and trying to build a solution that'll compare what my company has in stock, with what our website says we have in stock. Everyday we do a physical count (inventory) on around 100 items, and we need to compare that with what the website says we have. My solution has a field for what the website says (for each item). My date field needs to have the data in the exact format of mm/dd/yyyy. I'm not talking about how it displays, I need the month and day to always have a preceding zero, if either of them is <10. If my current date field includes the date 1/12/14, I need it converted to 01/12/2014. Is there a formula that will convert the actual data to this? Hi FMP13, cross platform I have a DB that I use as a master for different clients. From time to time I make updates for them by exporting their data and importing it into the new version. This works nicely except for the container fields. I use open external storage. When I export the data the container content gets embedded (I haven't seen any script options to keep FMP from doing that) and the export files get really big. When I import them it gets very very slow (begins fast and then slows down to like 15 seconds per record). So for 12'000 records it would probably take a day or two. Hello, Is it possible to import field names (from Excel) into an existing FM database? I previously imported field names from an Excel worksheet (File – Open – select Excel file – select worksheet – select ‘Field names’ from first row option panel – and FM converts file into an FM database). I would like to add new field names without having to type them in manually, however I cannot use the same method (FM writes over my previously imported field names). Is it possible to import additional field names from an Excel worksheet into an existing FM database? (Using FM Pro 13 / OS Windows 7) Thank you!

Excuse for the rookie question, but I can't figure out how to import an XML file. I understand that it needs a xsl stylesheet. But how can it be built? Funny thing is that Excel can import the file, it detects that it does not have a scheme for it, but creates it on the fly. From excel I can import the data, but I don't like to go that route. So how can one built a xsl style sheet for filemaker? The xml file I want to import is in fact a tcx file of bicycle rides, and they are xml actually. Any help? I understand the question is a bit general, but any pointing to the right direction would be helpful.

I am trying to allow a user who is remotely connected to the database, to execute a script that clones the database and saves to a networked (shared) folder. However, when the remote user clicks the button, nothing happens. The script is only one step for now as I am just testing a solution. It is the "Save a Copy As" script step, which contains the correct filepath to the shared drive. I am able to execute the script from my computer which hosts the actual database file with no issues. I've got script master and i did it some times, but is critical with lame on terminal osx. every time is not really useful, some times it works sometimes not (e.g. after 4 conversion, it stop and not work anymore, also closing, reopen etc.) btw, do u know something better to make this? best regards, Corrado

Our main database is a 4D database, but we use Filemaker to handle a number of "helper" applications. In order to access the data in our 4D system, we've installed ODBC Manager on a few of our workstations, and installed the 4D v13 driver from 4D's website. In general, this all seems to be working well. However, as we've begun doing more with this integration, I've run into an issue that as part of the import, the OS is asking for an administrator's name and password to allow Filemaker to make changes. I am in the process of converting scripts from a robot client to run as server side scripts and this is a common one that I have. This works, but exits with a script error of (101). I know about the big in server side scripts that produces this bug with "Go Record Next (Exit after last). Which happens in other files, but this one actualy shows up in the Schedule Log as an error. Hi Folks, Every couple of weeks I'm importing data from my colleagues database into mine (which acts as a master) and then giving her a copy of mine. (I was hoping to have MirrorSync or EasySync in place on the school server, but the management doesn't want that to happen - I'm now looking at GoZync which might be a runner, but not for a couple of months at least). So far, I've just gone through and imported each table one at a time. However I usually make a mistake and have to go back to backups and beer to sort things out. I have a database in FM Pro 11 made up of approx. 20 fields. New records / new information is constantly being added, but it is added in large batches by importing information from excel files. I'm having a problem I hope someone can help me with. I need to import a csv file on a daily basis that gets deposited on an FTP site. Problem is, FMP12 (my current version) does not easily allow for import of csv files in a cloud hosted application. FM13v5 MacOSX 10.10.1 LS, Strangest thing. I am exporting invoice lines with some invoice header date ( print_date, invoice_number ). I have done this dozens of times, but after export the excel opens with hundreds of white lines between records. When I us save this file with 'save as excel' the data contains no white lines. To allow for easy, simultaneous deletions of a parent and its children, I have started to take advantage of the following setting in the Relationship Table: "Delete related records in this table when a record is deleted in the other table." Hello I have calculation to show a google route map in a web viewer container. From this I extract the distance using GetLayoutObjectAttribute. A couple of issues: 1. Is there any way I can freeze the result, as each time I go to record the web page refreshes. 2. The distance only calculates if the object is visible making it unusable in another calculation or a different layout. In both instances I probably doing something wrong with storage but if I store the result, the calculation stays empty. Any thoughts? thanks

I know Repeating Fields are kind of a nightmare, and it's something I probably need to address. This was a very old system originally begun in FM 4.0 or so, and it's just not something I've fiddled with very much yet, but now I have an issue. I am using Repeating Fields for expenses billed to clients on a time-based invoice. Hi,  Yesterday I installed Filemaker 13 and converted my Filemaker 9 database to Filemaker 13.  Just now I went to use a script I've been using for 5 years and tried to import a text file but it didn't work and the issue is this:  In the 1st screenshot attached you can see that Filemaker 9 used to separate Source Fields into different Target Fields, which is what I wanted. In the 2nd screenshot you can see that Filemaker 13 is not separating any of the Source Fields during the import and is putting them all into Column A.  As far as I can tell, nothing has changed and I'm not sure why this import is suddenly not working, when all I did was to use an upda…

Hey guys, I've been trying to move all my tables from FileMaker to Access, all the data and the layout and everything. I sadly have next to no experience with either program. I've seen a link to FmPro Migrator posted in some places. Is this a trustworthy application, and will I do what I'm wanting, or am I misunderstanding it? Or is there an even easier way to do this? I haven't found much help for FileMaker 13, so I wasn't sure if maybe there was a new feature that made this easier.

Hello all, I'm exporting CSV files from FM Pro 13 on a Mac, with the first row containing field names and the second row containing one record of data. Our client's business rules require that the end-of-record delimiter specifically be CRLF (Carriage Return + Line Feed) instead of just CR. I've tried various export options/formats but FM seems to only give me CR as the delimiter. I imagine it can be done by post-processing the CSVs, but does anyone know if/how it can be accomplished natively in FM? And if you have any suggestions for the post-processing approach, I'd be interested in hearing about that too. Thanks very much--

Hi Just a question to get a feel for if this is possible. I support a FileMaker application (FM13+Server) written mostly by a third party, which the bulk of the requirement was for reporting. So the user runs a report, which creates an Excel document with selected columns of data (using a defined criteria to generate). At the moment, I have written a script to copy all documents from the documents folder on the FM server to a network location, and set up a scheduled task in Server to run this every 5 minutes. I am working on a project where there is a need to share some data with a 3rd part. Currently, the workflow is to export the records to a CSV and then upload the file to a web API that the 3rd party set up. We would like to send the data directly to the website from inside the solution, instead of having to go through the steps of exporting and manually uploading the file. I am not sure what this new automated-API will quite be like at the moment, as I am working with the web developer to create it in the first place. Is there a way to export related records such that you can get all records for each table (let's say 4 related tables - parent to great grand child table) so that each record for each table is shown in the exported excel file. In other words, parent fields will get repeated in one to many child records and parent records with no child will show blanks under the child variables. This seems to work properly only with direct parent and child records but once you get more than one table away, it doesn't seem to hold its hierarchy. Seems there should be an easy way to do this. When importing data to matching fields, I have three unstored calculation numeric fields that are displaying '?' and all downstream dependent fields do also. I have a solution that was originally developed in .FP6. I skipped FMP12 and moved it from FMP11 straight to FMP13 with no data problems during migration. Hi Everyone, For most of two days I've been trying to get a FM12 database to import information from another FM12 database. Unfortunately I seem to be doing something wrong. The general idea is to import information from one field into different fields of the other database, based on a relationship. That part is working but ... if I leave the field that creates the relationship blank I still get some input in the field that should only be filled based on the relationship. After importing records from a .csv file into FM 13 Advanced, is there any way I can set the script to delete the .csv? Here's my situation. I am exporting data from an accounting system to a .csv file that "appends" with fresh data until the user decides to run an import script in FM13. If the .csv file doesn't get deleted (or emptied of records) after the import into FM13, the accounting system export will just keep appending records into it and the import will be importing duplicate records into FM. I have a database that has to perform a replace field contents on hundreds of thousands of records on a weekly basis. Basically we get a CSV file and import it, then need to match a bunch of data to the existing records in the database. The problem is that the replace script is incredibly slow ... taking days to perform. I'm wondering if running an import (from one table to another using matching fields) would be faster than the replace function OR are they about the same in terms of performance. i realize there are many factors that affect the speed, but generally speaking is import faster OR roughly the same? thank you!!

I have two databases, call them Full and Subset. Without getting into complicated and unimportant background explanations, when it was created Subset had been simply export of part of part of Full--i.e. I did a Find to isolate certain records I needed (about half of Full), exported the results as another database, then trimmed down the fields, going from 33 down to four, adding one additional field that Full does not have. In short, I trimmed a couple of fields too many. I need to add back two more fields that are still in Full but were removed (months ago) from Subset. Hi everyone, I'm using FileMaker Pro 11 on a Mac. I'm doing some free work for a local minister. I'm trying to import a .txt file that was generated from his old DOS based database. The name of this old database software is Bible Illustrator (no longer around). I'm trying to switch this minister over to FileMaker. Below is the format of the .txt file (the first eleven records are listed below). Each record is separated by two separate lines containing a single forward slash. First off, we use a FileMaker database that is hosted on the machine I work on, and the other users use the "remote connection" to access the database. My issue arises when a a user attempts to use a script I have created. The script goes to a few layouts, shows all the records, and exports them to a folder on the machine I use as an excel spreadsheet. Hi I struggling with automatic recurring Imports. I am trying to import excel worksheets into a filemaker layout, I need to format the default table view to a suitable list view to add button scripts etc and improve the presentation. Everything works well on a single layout, However when i try use the layout to import another worksheet from the same document nothing imports ?? If I try and setup a clean import on a new layout with default settings everything works ok but i have lost all my design formatting.. any advise on what Im Missing? (apart from brain cells!) Is there a way to easily capture the name of a file being imported into Filemaker during the import process? For instance, if I have a CSV file called "FileName.csv," is there a way to set the value of a global field to "FileName.csv." This would be used to ensure that files aren't being imported multiple times. FM does display a dialog box during the import that says "Importing from FileName.csv," so I'm wondering if there isn't a function already in place that I'm just not privy to. Thanks!

I am a newbe with FMpro. I have V 8.5 and I export my database to a CSV file. However the other program I use the data with does not like the quotes the FM puts around all the data. Is there a way to export to a csv without the quotes around all the fields? This would make the transition between the two programs seamless. Thanks Jeff

As the title says I'm having trouble exporting records as a csv file to a file on the user's desktop. The problem I have is apparently these export paths: filemac:~/Desktop/LegAve_Orders/$file file:Desktop/LegAve_Orders/$file Both give a "File cannot be created on this disk" error. I assume because the export paths are not correct. Is there even a way to do this without knowing the user name?

Yesterday I created a field with a drop box and I chose the wrong type of value list name and I changed it to the correct one today. Is there any way to change yesterdays records to reflect the format I want the data to be outputted in today? FM12 - Windows XP/7. I have a script that exports a container field (that has a pdf) to the temporary folder and have it marked to "Automatically open file". The file has been created in the temporary folder but it doesn't open. Is that a problem that can be solved within Filemaker, or is that something that has to be defined on the computer (selecting which program opens which filetypes)? I've already implemented this successfully in one instance, setting the source by performing a find within one layout then setting up an import to another layout from the same file that's being worked in. However when I try to do this using the same method between another two layouts I'm struggling to get the source to set up correctly as filemaker appears to keep setting the source as the same as my desired target layout. I'm wondering if there is a online guide or a blog post just got one through the basics of doing this without FileMaker. I'll try to keep this short. I'm having problems with find requests through a script I created. The script switches to a layout that lists every purchase order created by an employee. If the order was submitted it will have a "Yes" in the PO Saved box. When the "Check for duplicate" button is pressed it takes the variables that I set (Serial#, ItemName, Yes) and puts it in the correct fields for a find. THE PROBLEM: When the script runs the find, even if there is a match it will say "no records match". I've bungled my way into this situation. I get the error when trying to import records from an older file to newer empty file. From a thread back in 2005 it was mentioned that the situation comes from file sharing. I believe I did it by running occasional checks of my Mac file using Windows Filemaker under Parallels. I've tried most every way I can think of to undo this, but no success. I have file sharing turned off, shut down Windows and Parallels, copied files to a new folder. Any thoughts on how to undo the situation to free up the file so I can run an updating script?
