Hi dear filemaker experts I need ur help I managed to prepare a database file using file maker pro advanced I n that I kept some buttons that perform "insert picture" function, and each button has to insert a specific picture in the chosen container field. the thing is that, in the clinic we r using iPads to share the entry of the data through filemaker go, here comes the problem, the button doesn't work on the iPads or even any other computer, because the path of the needed picture is on my computer only, in other words, the pictures needed to be entered are not on the iPads or the other computers, so the filemaker can't find it... I'm thinking this isn't possible but just in case I thought I'd ask. Let's say I have a record with three fields that are simply flags of 1 or 0. I can display a picture using a calculated container field based on those flags. But what if I want to display multiple pictures in that one field? Example: f_ninja = 1 f_borg = 0 f_devil = 1 Result: Example: f_ninja = 0 f_borg = 1 f_devil = 1 Result: Note that this also must be compatible with FM Go, which is why I'm doing this. I want to display icons to convey more data about a record in less space.

I used to be able to click on a container field and record a sound. How can I do that now? It doesn't bring up the microphone?

I have a container field that is populated primarily by pdf files. Every once in a great while a user will copy a pdf from one records container field to another records container field. The problem is that for some reason filemaker converts the file that is copied into the new records container field to a .wmf file type. I need to either need to figure out how to have filemaker retain the file type when a user selects copy and paste or to have filemaker display the file name in a separate field. I am using filemaker server 13 and the container fields are stored externally and also securely. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a cabinet shop. We store all of our shop drawings in PDF format on a remote server. We have been doing this successfully for several years. The shop drawings are inserted into a container field then opened with the Export Field Contents script in attached file. I am not sure exactly what kind of server software our host uses but the client stations at my shop are running Filemaker 10 on Mac OSX 10.4.1. I am trying to migrate this process to a hosted database running Filemaker 13 on OSX 10.9.4. I am using a different company to host the FM13 files than I am for the FM10 files. I have a rather large database, and I want to be able to click on a word that is in one entry, and have it take me to that data entry. Is this possible? Would I need to create each individual link? Or is there a way to stream line this? Let me know if that doesn't make sense, and I'll try to explain further what I want to do. Not sure if this is where to post this... One of my users can insert references to PDF files in a container field, but double-clicking to open them does nothing. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Filemaker 11 to no avail. The actual PDF files are located on a PC in my office and are accessible to all my users. She has no problem navigating to the PDF's using Windows Explorer and opening them directly, so I think this may be an operating system issue (Windows 7 32-bit) or some dependency is missing. All other users with identical Windows 7 PC's can open the files without a problem. Any ideas? Thanks, Kevin

Just created a new database in FMP13 for use on iPhone 5 with FM Go. Not my first one using interactive containers to store PDF docs on iPhone or iPad. PDF not stored outside of database. Can't insert PDF into container, plus sign appears and then…..nothing. Nothing appearing either in FM Go app when linked or physically loaded onto iPhone. Checked formatting and interactive content is set properly. This isn't a conversion of another FM database into FMP13. Checked my other databases that also store PDF's in containers and that were created in FMP13, no problem on MacOS or iOS. Any thoughts? Hi Everyone, When trying to insert the new Pages 5.2 or Numbers 3.2 files into FMP 13, i get the error "This file cannon be inserted because it contains other files inside it". I'm guessing no one else has this problem because i can't find any topics on it, so it seems like i'm the only one! Good Morning, I have a portal setup with a number of rows. I would like to adjust the value contained in a container based on what row is selected. The container is pointing to external data with variables that should be set by the selected row. When I change rows the container does not update. Should it, or do I need to create a script/trigger? I make heavy use of the insert from URL script step along with the RestFM server for posting to another file and running sync scripts. Something has changed with the way 13 handles insert from URL along with the GetAsURLEncoded. When using strings that work fine in 12 will simply not work in 13. I have called FM tech and they are looking into it. By simply removing the GetAsURLEncoded function the strings will work fine in 13. Yes, I know that could cause problems, but at least it works as a temporary solution for anyone else who finds this to be broken in their solutions.

Hi All, I have been trying to implement the Content Management starter solution into my database. It is currently hosted on FMS12 but all clients are running FMPA13. The problem I am having appears to only effect files on my Macbook Air when accessing the file. I get an error when dragging a PDF into the Interactive container that reads I have check and all of the PDF files I have tried to upload have the same issue, however, I have confirmed that all of these files begin with %pdf in a plain text editor. I am a regular user of FileMaker. However in my job I currently need to build a database of a few thousand invoices from different firms plus additional invoices. My situation to insure the quality of my work I need to write in File maker what is each invoice but I also need to keep a copy of the invoice as a picture. ATM I use drag and drop. So far everything is good. The problem is that I want to create some safety feature that will keep 2-3 copies at all time in case the database would become corrupt. I would like at container video to play without video controls. Or, I would like to hide the video controls during play in browse mode with an object...or something. But, the stacking order is not consistent when a layout is re-entered to view the autoplay interactive video container. The stacking order in layout mode is ignored in browse mode. So, masking the controls will not work. Is this possible? I can not seem to make this work.

Our databases are stored in FMS13 and accessed by clients using FMP13. Currently we use a container to store file references to Word and Excel files on our fileserver. Users can open the files in their native application by double clicking the file ref stored in the container. I was hoping to use the remote container field function to make it easier for users to store and share files. However it seems that one cannot use remote containers to store just a file reference, which as far as I can tell is the only way to enable opening by double clicking. Hi I have a few hundred client document files, mostly pdf, but also some images, word & excel docs that I am transferring into an FM12 container field. The application then lists the documents in a portal with the fields; "Document_Name" and "Document_Date". Unfortunately the transferred file's date is updated to today's date when it is dropped into the container field. I want to preserve or record the original creation date of the file (or modification date) for 'Compliance purposes' without having to type it in for each file. Just upgraded to FM13 from FM11. Many things have changed or broken/fixed. Extremely frustrating! In FM 11 once the checkbox for "Store Only A Reference To The File" was checked it stuck. Quit out of FM and go back in, insert a file and the checkbox would be how it was left. Once set the user could forget about it as it would always be as they left it last time. They only ever reference the files so it was one less thing they had to think about and are now in the habit of not thinking about it. Myself included. In FM 12 it resets. Is it possible to have a container fields reference quicktime movies on a SAN without copying them to a storage path determined by filemaker? I would like a filemaker solution to act as closely to Adobe Bridge as possible, where as filemaker would simply reference the selected SAN files. Is this possible? Thanks David

For instance, we have a user with the following specs who needs the container fields to use her preferred PDF viewer, NitroPDF but it uses Adobe. Is there a way to tell a container what it is holding after a file has already been inserted into it (file or Quicktime)? My goal is to be able to insert a song into a container by calculation (ideally) or by script (if necessary) and have it appear as quicktime, so it can be played back directly in the container. The song is already stored in Supercontainer or in another container field as a file, not as quicktime. The only way I can see how to do this is by having a script that first exports the file from Supercontainer or the other container field onto the desktop and then reimports it using Insert Quicktime. I have an expense report program where I import receipts (PDF) to container fields for each day of the week. Looking for a filemaker solution where I can collect the container fields (receipts) and create a single PDF file that contains the expense report plus attached receipts. The shortcomings of filemaker where I cannot append when using Export Field Contents, or create an email with multiple attachments has me doing things manually instead of a one button operation. i have a script that exports a pdf to the temp directory then inserts the FILE into a remote container. Works fine when I am in my home office - but i tried to perform the same script on another mac over WAN. The PDF file will insert fine IF i have the Interactive setting turned off on the container field. When it's on it doesn't seem to display anything - can't even drag & drop a pdf into the container. (The mac has Acrobat AND Preview) I've tried both Secure Remote Containers and Open Containers, didn't seem to matter. Any thoughts?

Hi all, i'm incredibly stumped by this. I have a FMP 12 database running on FMS 13 . I have 2 container fields that are set to image (jpg...etc) The images were originally taken from FMGO 13 (ipad) and the entire database was later moved to the server. The export field contents is grayed out even though I am set to full access. Whats weirder is that I have several identical containers that had video recorded from FMGO and I can export those no problem....Any help would be great! Thanks

I am running FM Server 12 Advanced. I have a container field with it's images being stored externally in a folder on the same server. I have a text field which contains the new name that I would like to apply to each photo. Can I rename the files from a client running on a different computer? I found this thread from a couple of years ago which explains a way that this can be done with the 30works Scriptmaster plugin. Can some please explain how to create the function that he is referring to in this comment? I do not have any experience with creating custom functions and it's not clear to me how proceed. Thanks.

We are using FM12 Adv. Need to place a created PDF in a container field for IWP users. We are using 360WorksRemote Scripter and it works fine with their test file, but not our live file. We set a variable, $file, before we begin to create and append the PDF. This is always inserted on Windows Server. We have tried $file=Get(DesktopPath) & Business::BusinessName & ".PDF ------ Works okay to Set Field for container, but IWP users cannot see it. plus file name has C:UsersAdministratorsDesktop before the actual PDF name. What should be the actual Insert File script step and the Variable for $file? thanks, Jim

Is there a way to download a database from Filemaker Server without downloading the external container data from that database? Also, when uploading a database back to server it will move the external container data the is there right now to the "removed" folder. I want the external data to stay. I am using filemaker pro 12 with advanced server 12.. I have a container field that contains pdf's. The images some time are not oriented correctly and when i flip the image within the container field it does not remaing flipped. I flip the image leave the record and come back into the record but, the image goes back to the original orientation. is this a known issue or am i missing something?

When storing files in Container fields, and using the option "Store container data externally", and using Secure Storage (vs Open Storage), and storing the files on a server, is necessary to give the uploaded files unique names? Or is it ok if users happen to upload a lot of files with similar names -- for example if you had a table of People, a field for HeadShot, and a bunch of files are named "Image.jpg" -- would that cause issues? I thought I remembered seeing someone say files needed to be renamed before using this remote storage feature...

I have a question that's probably more about image files than Container features, because I think my 'fix' will involve editing of the images rather than tweaking the database, but here goes. I pull a lot of images off the web from various sources for a database holding picture of actors. Of course these files come in a variety of formats and sizes but I usually convert them to .jpg files for storage. We have a Filemaker solution that stores a PDF in a container for users to view by clicking on the container and opening it in a web page. With Filemaker Server 12 all clients both on Filemaker Pro and Filemaker Go were able to open the PDFs without any issue. When we upgraded to Filemaker Server 13 the PDF container seemed to break on the GO devices. It still works without any issue on the Pro devices. I am very much a beginner. Hosting a filemaker 12 database. I would like clients to be able to double click a pdf within a container field to view the document on their machine. I have no problem viewing the document on my own computer but the clients computer will get a "file not found" error message. This one might be a reach... I'm using external & open storage on our FM server for containers, and we store all kinds of file types in various containers. If a user needs to edit the file, they have to export the file , edit as needed, reimport, and delete any previous versions. Would it be possible to Export Field Contents to the file path location it's being stored, causing FM to "overwrite" the file, and then proceed to open it automatically? My thought is that once the user makes the necessary edits and goes to save the document, the file path would already be pointing to the original location. Crazy idea? I am dragging images from a file on my computer into container fields. The files are stored on a server. All the images appear identical in Preview, Paint, Photoshop and any other way I open them. Some of the photos appear very small (thumbnails) in the containers. Others do not. Has anyone encountered this problem and is there an easy workaround? FWIW, I also took a screenshot of a sample image, exported (pasted) this screenshot into Photoshop and saved it as a new .jpg file. Once dragged into FileMaker, it *still* displays as a thumbnail. This leads me to believe the issue is with FM or the container, and not the image file. Thanks!

Just finished migrating existing container data (PDFs, Word Documents) from one table where the data was stored within the fmp12 file. I created a new table along with a new container field which was configured to use external storage so I would not inflate my main db file with all the container data. The import went fine all container data moved over successfully and is now being stored securely externally. On my layout I have the container field configured to show the PDF in an interactive viewer. I have a relative directory defined & available, and a separate calculation in the "Open storage:" field beneath. I'm testing a file I'm building where I have a button to import a picture into a field. On one hand, it works. That is, a picture ends up in the field. However, it is upside down. The photo was taken with a Canon camera. I also have a script to import a screenshot into a field, and that works without inverting. Both are in jpg format. Does anyone know why this happens? An Overview: We have a field called attachment, in the past the script Inserted a file reference to a PDF file. This database manages Service Tickets. When we email the ticket if there is a PDF in the Attachment field it goes along with it. This seems to have been discussed but the solution was a bit vague I would like store some images in the default remote container folder and show the image via a calculation (container). What file path should I use? I've tried image:/RC_Data_FMS/subfolders/filename" image:/ipAddress/RC_Data_FMS/subfolders/filename" and using get(filepath) it does work if I VPN into the server and use the full address but that is no good for users. My database has become bogged down with a table and a layout for a PDF document library, which is part of a larger FM solution that I'm building. Each record in the PDF library takes 5 - 15 seconds to load, and editing layouts that reference this table are equally slow. Any interaction with PDFs becomes a large waste of time. I have a rather large table in my database that contains product photos in a container field that references a secure external data source. Recently my db has been made accessible to staff over Remote Desktop and I've had no issues. Today I logged in at home through my FMP client and random photos were replaced by "The File Cannot Be Found" text. However, if I log in to the db through a remote desktop session on the server back at the office all the photos display without a problem. What is causing this??? I'm baffled. I have been searching all over the internet for a solution. I am running FileMaker Pro Advanced 12.0v4 on Windows 7 Professional and can't find out why the "Insert PDF..." option is grayed out and not available. With the Data->Images selected only "Insert PDF..." is grayed out. If I select Data->Interactive content both "Insert PDF..." and "Insert Sound..." are grayed out. Hi I'm successfully using JS/PHP to drag and drop an image to a webserver via a webviewer during a product creation process. The goal is to construct a product, send to an online shop using its API, continue and finalise the product in FMP12. The problem is, when uploaded successfully, I then need to populate a container field on my local file with the same image so FileMaker can use it. I dont seem to be able to alter the external storage location. The pull down menu is always just one uneditable location - Also this location uses the name of a previous database (which was copied and modified for the new use). I tried renaming the folder but that didn't help. Any thoughts? cheers

One of my clients has their Safari setup to use Preview.app for pdf viewing, yet when they view an FMP12 container field with a pdf in it, it shows the Acrobat interface... how can this be changed? At an official FileMaker event they said it would use the same helper app as your browser...

I have a database on server w/ remote containers. I have a development database with updates. I have an updater script that upgrades hosted database to the new database through scripted import of all records in all 60+ tables. When using remote container fields the links due not import properly, and the new database with imported records no longer has access to remote containers. The import process happens on a copy of pro advance on the server machine. Any thoughts? Using normal containers works fine, but my solution is picture intensive and the database is growing rapidly. Would love to make the updater work with remote containers. Thanks!

I'm using an FM12 Enhanced Container to store client docs. If I drop pdf or image files into the container they are interactive. That is to say I can scroll down the pages of a pdf in the container, even movies play in the container. However Word or Excel docs are only displayed as an icon and so I must export them before I am able to view them. I do have MS Word & Excel 2011 for Mac installed. My question is: Is this normal behaviour or is there something wrong with my setup? I have googled this issue but cannot confirm either way. Help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd like to be able to get the complete file path to files that have been Dragged & Dropped (not inserted) into container fields. None of the "Get" or "GetAs" functions seem to do this. Is there a function or work around to getting the complete file paths? The basic concept is for the end user to drag & drop files into a container field, with calculations/scripts obtaining the complete path, allowing renaming via AppleScript and other manipulations. Any ideas? If the file is "Inserted" this is trivial, but much more time consuming for the end user since they have to navigate to it. This is in FM12 Advanced.

Hi everyone I'm going to try my question within this forum. I'm at a loss and need some help. I'm trying to transfer my database to another computer. The db contains secure, external containers, which are contained in different folders depending on the table they're in. I am trying to Save As Copy > Self Contained, however it isn't sucking in the container data. FM is still trying to reference an external source within the new "self-contained" file. One of our users today approached me about adding an add file button to our layout, because she didn't like to use drag and drop. I told her she should be able to right click and choose Select Picture to get the functionality she wanted. She told me right clicking only gives her cut, copy and paste. I made an account with her privilege set, and confirmed that it does indeed not include the other right click menu options, like my full account does. Problem is, I had no idea this was a thing, or how to approach fixing it? Where in the world is there a setting I can change to give the more exhaustive right click menu options to my users?

I guess I just don't understand containers. I created a container field and placed a picture in it. When viewed the picture shows up in all the records for that file. What did i forget to make the picture only related to that one record?? TIA

Hi, it's probably very easy, but I don't know how to access the data inside of a container field. I have a script that inserts a small text file (insert, no reference) into a container and all I can see is a file icon with the filename. When I use «GetAsText(ContainerField)», I only get the filename. But how can I access the data inside of this container/file? I need to perform a couple of text manipulations and store the results in another field of this record. Thanks so much for any help. Gary

I have a solution where I have placed ALL container field referenced .pdf's into one folder (remember when we used to call them directories?) when I should have used subfolders for each year, i.e., 2011, 2012, 2013, etc. Is there an "easy" way to change the file paths for each year's pdf files? Hi all, I'm wondering what the best way to store images in a container field is if I would like to do the following. - Have the images be stored outside of the database - be able to access the images with and iPad or iPhone I'm setting up a wordpress to ecommerce store that will grab images from the filemaker records and post them to the WP server. I have a student database. Each student has a unique student Id. I have a drive full of student pictures - each picture is named <student_id>.jpg. I have created a container field which stores the container data externally. Is there any way I can dump the student pictures into the relevant folder determined by the container field, and automatically update the container field so that it looks for the equivalent <student_id>.jpg. eg UPDATE tblStudents SET PHOTO = 'Databases/Students/Photos/<Student_id>.jpg. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum but I didn't find one specific for container fields. The problem I´m having is, all pictures I save to FMP 12 containers fields show as landscape. This is what I do: - I take some pictures with my iPhone, some landscape, some portrait - I open image capture, drag the pictures to my desktop - I drag them from the desktop to a FM container field - They all appear as landscape How come the ones that show as portrait (even in the desktop) they show as landscape in FM? It seems like there is no difference when it comes to selecting the .pdf file to be inserted into my container fields whether I select "Picture" or "File" or "PDF" other than a cosmetic feel if you will .. the visual image one sees. Hello, I have a solution that is using the external container option in FM12. I chose to use Secure. I have encountered an error that is causing the program to rash. After releasing a new version to the solution, it imports all of the user data from the previous version. All data is copied just fine and the Secure data folder from the container is also copied over into the program directory of the database. Whenever I try to access one of the records that contains data from from the container, the program crashes. I am using FM12 on a Mac. I am also attaching the error log below in a text file. Hello, I am currently migrating my container fields that used references to their files to the new external container fields in FM12. When I import my data into the new file, the references in the containers did not migrate to the container that I set up. What am I missing? Hello, I am currently working on converting over to an external container secure storage for my solution. In my current solution the container's content are images. I have a script that opens the image in Preview for Mac when the user selects to do so. My question is how can I accomplish this same use case with the new secure storage? Ideally, I would like the user to click the button "View Image" and it would open up. I know I can export the contents, let's say to the desktop, but I would like to make this as straight forward for the user as possible. One thought I had was to export it to a temp location and then open it. Thoughts? Thanks, Stephen

Sorry if not the correct area for this, as it does not involve remote fields, but does involve container fields. I am converting an FMP11 solution to FMP12. I have a repeating field (container) that I scripted the ability to put up to 3 pictures, as defined by a lookup based on the id. The pictures reside in a separate file. Works fine in 11. Converted to 12, and sometimes the picture shows up, sometimes I get a 'counter-clockwise arrow' showing up. Pictures are all small (thumbnail) jpegs, nothing large. Any ideas on what is happening? I am trying to find out if there is a way to rename a file stored in a container without performing an Export Field Contents ( $customFileName ) and Import File ( $customFileName ) script steps. I know it's possible using the above method but seems cumbersome to have to completely export a file, rename it and then re-upload it. If this is the only method then so be it, but I figure I would ask before going down that road.

I have a container field in which I am using the drag and drop feature to store files on the FM server. When I drag in PDFs and JPEGs however no file name or file icon appear. Is there a way to make it simply appear with the PDF icon and its file name? I feel I've got a grip on setting up the new container fields with external storage okay, but I just realized I'm unclear on how I can allow a user to draw upon these images external to FMP -- in other words, if you want to copy a container field image file to the desktop, or to open the actual image file in another graphics program for manipulation. We are storing .mp4 files in records which have a container field optimized for video. The FM file is hosted on FM12 server. The files insert correctly and the field transforms into a player but clicking play does nothing. The files are 4-8 MB. Deleteing the file, re-inserting it as a file (as opposed to a video) and then exporting the file with the the additional instruction to oepn upon export will successfully export, open the Quicktime player and play the file when the play button is clicked on the QT player. This problem is absolutely driving us nuts, and has been for a week straight. Full disclosure, I just started this job and have never worked with FM before, so I have no doubt we're just missing something. What is the best way to attach a file located in a container field from a current record when I use the send e-mail script? Does it matter if the file is hosted remotely and container data stored externally?

I seem to be getting into trouble with broken path directories to my remotely stored container files. For some records the container displays "<Missing:myfilename.JPG>. It seems that sometimes a new folder is created to remotely store the file even though it is the same field. Since the field cannot display images remotely stored in two different paths, some are shown as missing. In a simple test database, I was able to correct this by creating a third folder and recreating the base directory to point to that new folder, and then transfer the data. Is there a way to open a PDF from a container field other than to open url pointing to the path if the pdf is stored remotely and not encrypted?

Has anyone encountered a problem resizing a container with an image (jpg, png, etc.)? It works fine when the db is local, but when hosted on FM12 server, we get "Missing File" in the container rather than the scaled image. This is the case if we choose embedded or secure storage for the container. The store by reference option is the only one that continues to support scaling. The weird thing is that you can see the image if you make the container big enough (almost as big as the original image size), but it vanishes when you shrink the container. In this solution users capture a signature to print on a Bill of Lading. The signatures are captured using a plugin (eSign Signature Capture) and signature pad and all is working fine in FileMaker 11. I did a test conversion to FileMaker 12. Navigation and scripts all work fine. The client is happy with the conversion and the new features they will get. However, there seems to be a problem with the signatures that have been captured. On a hosted FM12 database, it does not appear possible to have the storage location be on a connected hard disk, e.g., a FireWire volume. e.g., when the "Base Directories" in "Manage Containers" is set to "/Volumes/ExternalHD/FolderName/" on a local FM12 file, this works fine and the files are stored in the expected location. When using FileMaker's new remote containers - and the databases is hosted here are a few caveats that you may wish to employ... Each container field in each table must be setup which should include the serial number of the record you are on (either a sequential or the UUID) This way EACH image you add to the table on the back end the server will create a directory for this file image. When checking for existing files on an external share, I use an "Insert File" Script step with two Paths and insert the file into a global field. Like this: Path 1: $Path Path 2: Get ( FileMakerPath ) & "XText.dll" Then I check to see what file is in the global field so I can see if there is an existing file or not. Obviously if there is the global fields content will have the same name as "$Path" else "XText.dll". Maybe this is a new definition or a bug?
