Hi, Please check the error attached, which says that the file is open and it can be opened by the REMOTE command. The file is open by another user. But on my computer the Remote command shows an empty box! And the only way to open any files is by going to RECENT files. REMOTE command shows files normally for all other users. Is there a setting I need to configure on my computer. Please help, thanks!

I've recently been hired by a small company that uses a FileMaker database (not FM Server) to keep track of customers, invoices, etc. After quizzing the guy who built the database, he currently has Time Machine as the sole backup plan. From the research I've done, this sounds like it's not a good idea since the files are open when Time Machine runs and you may get consistency errors. Hi All We have a recruitment databases across two files - 1 for our clients and 1 for our candidate. I recently found the RCC Recruiter template which should work great for both. I created a simple multi user fmp14 db that I uploaded to my mac mini fop server thru fmp14 upload process. now, when I am logged in with full access rights, I can't make any changes because I get a "Admin ()" is using or modifying these items or layout. Allow the user to log in through our current employee portal, click a link and access the FMP form. Restrict the user's access to records in the FMP database to only their location. I have a potential customer who just merged offices with another company. One office is Mac and the other is PC. One loves FileMaker and the other uses something else. The Mac/FileMaker team wants to convince the PC/noname team to use their solution. Nobody wants to change. They've asked me to give advice. Hi All I'm about to incorporate a database written for a company I work for. Currently, our system is run off of a Windows Server, on which our Oracle database is placed, along with the front end software (R2) we use to manage it via remote desktop sessions. Each user has their own Windows server log in, and their own log in to access the R2/Oracle system simultaneously. Hi everybody! I manage a small network of 5 Mac running from OS X 10.4 to OS X 10.6. I have a solution FM Pro 5.5 (yes 5.5!) which files are resident on a OS X 10.4 PowerPC computer. This is the only PowerPC machine, the other 4 are Intel based. The solution is quite simple, a dozen or so of shared files, very light and very basic operations. The question: if I open a file as a host on the OS X 10.4 PowerPC computer the other 4 while trying to open remote the file they don't see any host! We are running machines A & B, one a Mac Mini, the other an iMac, both running OSX 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, both running FileMaker Pro 11.0v4. We have a number of databases which we use each day, and have used for years. They all live on machine A. Machine B accesses the files via Open Remote. Not sure this is the right place to ask, but I've been periodically needled by a few dialogue boxes that occasionally pop up when I fire up FMP 11. Sometimes it's something like "Cannot Share Files because ___" -- but this is happening when I just open a single File for myself and am not needing to Share it . . . Hey Guys! So here's my latest dilemma. Client has FMP10 and i have FMP10A. i need to make changes to the database they are using. I should just be able to "Open Remote" and input their outside IP address and make the changes right? Tech support says it should work, provided port 5003 and port forwarding are full operational, and they are. So unless they're just lying, there is another solution here. Client has Lion Server. I'm looking for some advice. I am trying to connect to my database at my office from home. I have set up a dedicated IP for the server at the office. However connecting from home is terribly slow. Are there any alternatives to make the connection faster? Would using any 3rd party software help like Citrix or something?

I keep my database in Dropbox (online storage) so that I and others can access it from their computer. The images that are linked to the database are also kept in the Dropbox folder. However, when I access the database from a different computer, it is not able to display the image due to the path. When I look at the path to the image, it seems to change and incorporate the hardrive of the computer that is accessing the database, therefore breaking the links. There are over 3000 images so I want to keep the images as links and not imbed them. Any suggestions?

I have been able to connect with my IPhone with FileMaker Go (Router ports forwarded etc, all works great). My Question is this... (and I could be way off the mark here)... I am having some trouble with one particular computer. This is a Windows 7 computer, that is using File Maker Pro Advanced. This is the only computer that is unable to access a database over the network. I have installed the updates for File Maker Pro. There are two different Vlan's on the network with one being locked down more than the other. I have an iMac that is holding the main file and also sharing that folder so the laptop I have can access the file. When I add new records to the file from the laptop, the laptop can see the new records, but the iMac does not. I also have another file that is being hosted on the iDisk and I can access that through a few other machines and I can update the file, but when the other users do so, it tends to corrupt the database and I keep losing records. I am new to using one computer(host) to share files. I set up one computer started up fmpro9 as host and i have 2 other computers that i access the host computer through local area network(works great) but once in a while the host computer will give a "file corrupt" message and to use the "Recover" to open it back up. Hiya, We use peer to peer sharing between FMP11/Win7 PCs. The actual files are stored on a server share for backup purposes. The 'main' PC opens the files directly from this share with sharing turned on. Other clients open using the Remote option. The causes the warning about sharing from remote locations (server shares) may cause performance issues. Is there anyway to stop this warning? Alternatively if there is a way to acheive the following using Server that would be great: 1) Ability to copy the files from the share to a laptop for offline use 2) When the laptop is brought back in, ability to copy back to the share overwriting the files …

I have two Macs (one Snow Leopard and the other Leopard). The Leopard computer wants to have access to a FM6 database hosted on the Snow Leopard computer. Currently have a very complex and robust deploy in FMPro v6 -- 3 peer-to-peer users -- on Windows XP cpu's. Everything works solid and reluctant to up-migrate since I already own the deploy and FMP apps. Will this continue to work trouble-free in Windows 7?

I created a button called "Open Movie in Quicktime Player", and set that button to "Send Event". I've set up the target application to "Quicktime Player". Hi yal, I've got a shared database being shared on old machine with FM9. I also use this old machine as a file server. Its a very simple peer to peer network. What I'd like to do, but have had difficulty working out, is to create links to folders(located on the file server machine) in the FM database (stored on the same fileserver) and have users accessing the database remotley click on the link/button to launch a link to the fileserver directories/resources. Hiya Currently have 5 users using FMP 9. The main user opens the databases with sharing first (directly from a file share), whith the data stored on a central server. Then the subsequent users open the databses using the Open Remote option. As the first user is opening the files directly, they get the "xxx is a shared file. Opening a shared file directly from a remote volume will reduce performance and can affect reliability". Is it possible to disable this message? I visited a client for the first time today. They're using FM7 and have a single table, non-relational, database. The have a "non-traditional" FM sharing set up. The file lives on a server computer. When a user wants to open the file, they first check to see if it's already been opened by another user (via Open Remote...Local Hosts). If no user is serving the file, then they navigate to the server computer and open the file and become the host. I'm pretty sure this is a recipe for disaster, but can someone confirm that for me and why, with FMP or KB or other references? Thanks, DJ

Filmaker Pro 5.0 Windows XP sp2 The database has been in use for years. Sharing is set to TCP/IP. Firewall (default windows firewall) has been set to not block filemaker. Confimed that Port 5003 is not in use prior to launching Filemaker. Confirmed that filemaker attaches to port 5003 when launched. We can ping the host. Here is the problem I am having. I recently upgraded from FM Pro 8 to FM Pro Advanced 9. The software installed fine and everything appears to work fine except the sharing of the database so other users can access the software here at our office. I am very new to FileMaker, I have a small FileMaker db with only 5 users. The file is on a shared directory on the network. If one user is using the db no one else can enter. If a second user tries to enter he/she get a message saying that the file is being used by another user and it is locked. We have been sharing a Filemaker Pro 9 database across our office network successfully for the last few years. Recently we are receiving the error message: “Filemaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using Filemaker Pro on this computer” This is appearing on all computers on the network when they try to access the database resulting in only one person at a time being able to access. Can someone explain the point of FM server and Client installs? Currently we are just using a client install with all our files open and shared over the network. What is the advantage to using FM server?

first off, i apologize if this isn't in the right place, but not sure ware it really should be. I work with an inspection company. We want to centralize our clients and inspections into a computer bassed application. We have a few inspectors but cant always be at an internet connection. Each inspector would have the DB on there laptop and be able to lookup clients and then choose the inspection they are to do and fill in the forms appropriately. However, we all want to have the data updated so that we all have the same information.(inspections, clients and all) Does file maker really allow us to "Sync" data across multiple instansis of the same DB? Filemaker 9 Advanced running on OS X. Filemaker (same license #) running on Windows. (nice part about FM license - dual platform, single license legal) Database opened on OS X. From Windows - Open Remote. The OS X side shows up on Windows in the HOST side of the dialog, but the FILES side is empty. Hard typing a IP/Filename enabled the OK, but times out. The network file path is correct (it works from an external PC). IF the Windows box is stand alone, this exact setup works from OS X. It is the virtual machine setup that does not seem to work. Hi, We have a small office network of four computers sharing a NAS drive. The NAS drive is always on and is effectively our server. The other computers are used by the company's employees and are not always in use. We all want to have access to a shared Filemaker (Pro 9) database. When I open the database, I get a warning that this is a shared database, but that performance will be inhibited by the fact that I'm not running it on the computer I'm accessing it from. Hi - here is the scenario ... we run a fm 8.5 db at work that is made up of around 20 separate files all linked together using file references and fm network sharing. Effectively I am trying to make a copy of this set up so that I can do some development work. Having taken a copy of the files onto a non-networked machine I am finding that opening the files is virtually impossible. FM detects the network is missing and eventually prompts to locate the file, but after doing this two or three times then appears to hang. Is there anyway to open the files but to halt the process before the file references are made? This way at least I can get in and change them.…

Someone told me the following: With a peer to peer networked DB a developer can still make changes (add/modify layouts/ fields/formulas/relationships, etc...) to the db while being used by other users. I don't know to what extend this is true and how risky/safe it is to modify a db while in use; I would like the opinion of the experts. Thanks

I have two doctors on the same network that want to each have the same FileMaker Pro data file sets without interfering with each other. They will never need to access each other's file sets. I see 2 possible ways to do this, if it can be done at all. Keep in mind all computers are on the same network switch. And I prefer to keep the data file sets named the way they are, rather than renaming one set. #1 - Could I create 2 workgroups (i.e.SMITH and OLSON). I have a solution that is various files (for Module sake) and I just upgraded it to Filemaker 9. The issue I am having is the Import script step. When I open the file remotely, it does not see the files it is to import from over the network, even those are files that are already open over the network. The script works flawlessly on the host computer, but not remotely.

Hey, I have a solution at work where an FM7 solution is used on a local network. One of the computer ( total 4) has the file open and the other use open remote to acess it. This computer is hooked up to a router which in turn connects to the internet via ADSL. Shouldn't i then be able to open that file remotly from my home as long as it's running at work? One of the problems is that i can't find what IP-adress that computer has. If i use IPCONFG in dos i will only get the IP that it uses in local network. How can i find the IP adress that that computer uses when accessinng internet? And where do i enter that information? If this is possible to do :

Hi, I'm new to filemaker. I have it set up on 2 iMacs which are connected via a wireless network. I'd like to share my database between the two computers. I have Sharing turned ON in FileMaker Network Settings, allowing user access to the file. The Box marked "Don't display in Open Remote File dialog" is UNCHECKED. I believe I have everything the way it's supposed to go... The database is open on the host computer. On the other computer, I go to Open Remote..., I can see the host computer, but when I click on it, the database I'd like to access doesn't come up. Help... please... and thank you!

I have a customer with a 3 computer office. Mac 1 is on a fast wireless connection, and hosts the FM 9.0v3 database in MacOS 10.4.11, and also hosts a folder of common files. PC 1 can connect to the common folder, and can connect to Mac 1's hosted FM database with no problem. It is plugged into the wireless router ethernet ports. FM 9.0v3 for Windows XP. Mac 2 can connect to the shared folder of files, and can see Mac 1 in Open Remote, but does not see the hosted database! It is also connected to the wireless router through an ethernet port. Problem: VPN users don't see any local hosts or databases when they Open Remote. Setup: MacMini running leopard is hosting a single database & it's connected to the network in the office. I have two users that are connecting via VPN from their homes (PC & Mac). Upon selecting Open Remote they get a dialogue box without any hosts or databases being displayed. Should this setup work? Hello everyone. This is not only my first post, but also my first real time using FileMaker or creating a database in general. With that said, please bear with me if I ask lots of questions to muddle through my current problem. I am currently the admin and hosting a database off of my Apple G5 using OSX 10.4. im installing a peer to peer on a windows network with a host that uses some data from a related file. I have tried fmnet:/hostname/filename but still get the "file cant be found" message when logging in as a client. Does this file have to be open on the host too? I thought the network path was enough.

I hope I say this properly. I know file maker pretty well but I have FM Pro 8 on a laptop but I want it to simultaneously update to an iMac as well. The laptop is running Leopard and the imac is running tiger. It is being used in the health center at the high school I work at and I only want them to be able to input the data they need to check them in and out of the nurses office. Is this possible? I inhereted a filemaker network from my boss and am still learning the fine points(and lets face it the basic concepts too) of this particular type of database. I recently got our office (3 users of FM using peer to peer, 1 host 2 clients, 1 local 1 VPN) up to v8, today being the first day that more than 1 user was using it at a time. Several weird things have been happening that I thought were impossible. The first one scares me the most... User 1 is in a record (a field is selected), in an Invoice, and one of the other 2 users can get to the same invoice where they are also able to select a field and enter data into it. I have a stable working database that 1 person uses.... I would like (and need to) make it a multi-user database for contracts. I plan to serve it using FMSA 8.0- which is already up and running. We have been using Filemaker for quite some time on a single computer in our non-profit organization - and have experienced no problems. Within the past year, we bought two new computers, networked them together and upgraded to Filemaker Pro 8.5. Since then, we have had a problem with the slave computer suddenly crashing (for apparently no reason) while using Filemaker. The crash goes like this... the coffee cup suddenly appears followed by a blank grey screen - and the whole computer freezes. Is this network related? A coworker and myself are working on a database (9.0v3). We would like to be able to work on it simultaneously. 2-days per week I am in the same office as he so it is no problem using our LAN with one of us hosting. I am using FM6 and I am having trouble access our database over a vpn with multi users. When only one person is on the database it works fine, but when another person tries to access it we get message stating that the database is not in multiuser mode or host cannot be found. It is in multiuser mode. Any help

This is probably a beginner question. I am running filemaker 8.5 on my network. As an administrator, if I am the first to log in I become the host. When others log in remotely, that is when I have a problem. Different users have different access privileges. How can I make sure they log in remotely and have the proper limits to their privileges? Right now, if they log in remotely, they have the access privileges of the initial host. I do not want them having full access. Is there some type of work around, or am i missing something obvious? I have a novice question I could not answer from searching. I want to share a filemaker 6 data base between two computers which are not networked. Both are Mac's. The purpose of sharing the data base is that both users will make changes to the data base. I was thinking of having the data file reside on a server that both computers could access via the net, like a .mac account. The users don't want to have to copy the file from the server to their own computers each time they want to make a change to the data base. Someone told me that we need a newer version of file maker to do this. Is that correct? which version? Thanks.

I created a medical database and a case management database. The case management database needs to access information stored on the medical database. I created the relationship between the 2 databases but when we open up the case management database, the following occurs: The feilds with shared info read . If we go to the manage external data sources screen, double click on the medical database and then hit "ok", it tehn says we need to open the medical database remotely. Problem description: We're using a copy of File Maker Pro 5 to share a couple of databases. FM5 is run (first) on the server so it will share the file with other computers. Worked fine until we installed a VPN on the server, so the server now has 2 LAN interfaces. It is apparently attaching to the VPN interface and ignoring the physical network interface. I have a small database that will act as a quick fix until I can finish developing and deploy a more robust php/sql solution that will reside on the companies web site hosted externally with 1and1.com. From my time here at this forum, I've learned that the fastest way to make a FileMaker expert faint is to tell them that you have a database stored on a server and each user is opening it individually. So I won't admit that it happens here in my office. : But IF it were, I'd be repentant and want to change. Our (hypothetical) challenge is that our file server runs Linux.
